Has anyone ever tried to make their own Sanders Bumpy Cake?

I was so excited to learn that Sanders will now ship cakes outside of Michigan and planned to order one for Christmas. Well, when I called this morning, I was told that they were so overwhelmed with orders that they are not taking any more until after Christmas. I'm crushed.

So I've found the recipe online and I'm thinking of trying to make it myself. Anyone have any experience with making one? How did it taste?

Will you share the recipe? I moved away from Michigan in 1982, and I still miss bump cake.

Ok, what is a bump cake :confused3

I LOVE Sander's Bumpy Cake!!!
I can't wait to hear if it turned out the same when you baked it yourself :)

I'm sorry, I've never made one homemade but I have to agree, they are soooo good! ::yes::

I wish it didn't have to be kept cold because Sanders just started carrying them in the freezer at my local grocery store ~ I'd be happy to ship one but I've never done anything with dry ice and wouldn't have a clue how to do that.

Yes, bumpty cake is soemthing we take for granted around here.

They even have sanders bumpy cake ice cream. (and yes it is good.) :cool1:

(now I could do with a little more sunshine and less snow.) :sunny:

My husband had the same idea - just have someone ship you one. My concern is that it would arrive completely smashed. I'm sure they take extra special precaution when packaging them for shipment. Thanks for thinking of doing that though!! :)

I'm going to try to make one on Friday (our dinner party is Saturday). I'll make a cheesecake too, just in case!

I can't even IMAGINE how wonderful that must be!!!

Bumpy cake ice cream is better then the cake is now. It just isn't like it used to be when Saunder stores were open. However, if you live near Canton at the Holiday Market on Cherry Hill and Liley they make there own version of the bumpy cake and it's just like the original Saunder's cake.

The holiday market in Royal Oak does too, however I didn't know there was more then one of them.

I, myself, never understood what the big deal about Sander's Bumpy Cake was, but I just want to give your Bumpy Cake thread a BUMP :teeth:

This has nothing to do with mail order bumpy cakes, but just had to add that DD's birthday cake request for Friday's 20th birthday is a Saunder's bumpy cake!

I have never heard of Saunders bump cake but I do have the recipe for Saunders Butter cream frosting. As a child, my mom always frosted our birthday cakes with it. YUM! I still think it is better than sugar frosting.

Well you can also buy the Sanders Buttercream cake now too!!

I was so happy to see a Sander's store open in Laurel Park Mall. My 86 yr old mom was thrilled to see the old Pavillion Box of chocolates. I remember as a very young child going to Sander's on Grand River and the one on Plymouth Road near Evergreen. I remember those hot fudge cream puffs and sittting at the counter with the little shelf under it! I also remember getting water in those cone shaped paper cups with the metal holders.

I heard somewhere that they are opening up a Sanders Soda Fountain somewhere in the area. Anyone else here this rumor?

If found the following USA Today article onine from 12/04:
===========================================
Hello, sweetheart — It was more than bittersweet when Detroit's hometown confectioner for 130 years, Sanders Candy, closed its last retail outlets, with their old-fashioned lunch counters, almost a decade ago. Another venerable local candy maker, Morley, in business since 1919, recently bought the rights to the brand and has just opened a full-line Sanders store in the upscale Laurel Park Place mall in Livonia, about 20 minutes west of downtown Detroit. Yes, it's true that Sanders hot fudge sauce and boxed chocolates are available in local stores and online, but the new outlet offers 80 items including the beloved Bumpy Cake (a Detroit birthday tradition) along with that nostalgic Sanders atmosphere. A second location, complete with soda fountain, is expected shortly. 37702 Six Mile Rd.; 734-591-2147; www.sanderscandy.com.
