This may be a bit OT. But, I could use some help. I am looking for a jacket for a ten year old to wear as part of a MJ costume. They cost a fortune on ebay and at costume websites. Does anyone have ideas on how to make my own cheaply or how to find an inexpensive one? Thanks!

Pick a "different" Michael Jackson, unless of course you are doing "Thriller" with the blood on the face and need the red leather. (If you do, look for a "pleather" jacket in a thrift store and spray-paint it red, taping off the black stripes. The paint will crack, but you only need it to last one day.)

The cheapest look to do is the one from "Off the Wall" with the black dinner jacket, tux shirt, the bow tie, the too-short pegged pants, and the white socks. You can find all of those items at thrift stores, the fit is what matters for the look. Add shoulder pads to whatever you find.

I didn't check the price, but they had them at the local halloween store here (you know-those stores that open in a vacant store just for halloween or christmas)

I managed to pull together a costume for both of us off of regular clothing. I used what we had if it worked. And went clothe shopping at the Salvation Army for the rest.
Although there's a few things that I've bought at Target/Wal-mart, that were already really cheap or on clearance. That way I don't feel bad cutting it up or adding things to it.

The year we made the Dreamfinder costume, we managed to find a pastel yellow suit at the salvation army... really awful looking. Like it probably came from the 50's or something. And I'm sure the person that donated it probably never imagined what it became. But it was a suit, it was cheap, so it got spray painted blue. I think we used about 4 cans to cover the whole thing. But half way through the night Kari split the seam when we sat down to watch the parade (it wasn't bad enough to notice). But unfortantly it did get thrown out afterwards.

Thanks everyone for the ideas! I got the wig/hat/sunglasses glove set at Target, that set me back $25! So I wanted to go pretty cheap on the outfit. What I found today was a white disco suit and jacket at walmart website for $5 with 97 cent shipping:cool1:...I think that it will all come together...the suit may need some alterations and spiffing up but I was not going to spend $30 at a costume store! If something better presents itself, I won't feel too bad having spent only $6 on the suit!

I was in Michael's this past weekend and they had a display of various colored duct tape - and hanging over it, a perfect Thriller red jacket made entirely out of red and black duct tape! It was awesome, and I imagine very inexpensive!

I checked it out at Michael's online...it is great! I got my duck tape at walmart and I am making it tonight! The other costume is getting returned!
