no worries! we are all in this together. :goodvibes

Thank you, I WILL keep that thought and continue to listen to her(even though it is driving me batty!!). I am still, "the best momma" to her and all but I know that it is fleeting. I am seriously gonna cry. This has happened so fast. I mean, i knew that she'd get it before all her friends due to her steroid consumption:eek: as a part of her chemo protocol(the onc told us she'd start a year or so early) and we fought it and still do by doing mostly non-steroid food products, but it didn't help much, unfortunately. She just had her body poisoned by that cr--. It healed her, so I am not complaining.

Anyway- I just had to vent b/c it is such a big difference. I feel as though the little girl is going away.:sad2: :sad1:
But I am looking forward to trying to enjoy these crazy years.

Lori

As a Mom & a Nana to two of the female persuasion, (I swear Alexis already 5 going on 15!) I totally give you permission to vent away!!! When my DD started with it, some of the saddest most melancholy times of my life.

Lori, can you give me a quick rundown of the foods you avoided giving Ashley. Alexis's mom was also only 10 when it happened, so I can assume it could be that early with Alexis. We've just been buying organic milk & eggs, what other things have you stayed away from. I mean we'd all watch the meat, but there are other bills that have to be paid.

About 6 months into chemo, we did the organic milk, eggs, cheese(only b/c she loved it and ate it often). Then a few months later, we started doing all natural meats from Whole Foods. The organic kind was just too pricey and the guidelines to be officially "organic' are harder for farmers to attain-so natural is no seroids or. antibiotics given to the cows and chickens and whatnot. To be "organic" the animals have to eat organic as well, plus have no extras. I made a monthly trip to Whole foods and loaded up on all our meat. I rarely bought veggies there b/c we just get frozen.

We also made waffles, buscuits, pancakes, etc.. from scratch, using unbleached organic flour, ground flaxseed, soy flour and some other grains all mixed up. I used a lot of ground up nuts too. Fish is wonderful with ground up pecans-baked or paneed. She also took and still takes a veggie/enzyme and Vit C, and acidophilus. In the past 2 years we have dwindled down to few natural meats(it just killed our budget, but do not regret the extra spent money), and still do organic milk and natural eggs or fresh eggs(mostly from a friend who has chickens and only feeds them veggies and whatever the feed is). I have just started to implement some of our old ways b/c we got so far off of them. Back to whole grain breads and making my own muffins and pancakes(I am gonna miss the easy jiffy and Martha White muffin mix!!). Ironically, I have always mixed Smart Balance with butter. I mean, margarine is horrible for cancer and butter is horrible for your heart-what gives?!!! I am happy that Smart Balance now does the mixin' for me! Good oils are grapeseed and olive(the darkest-1st cold pressed), and even coconut oil.

Right now our diet is very typical of the modern American family- easy foods, some fast food(not much), and about 3-4 nice dinners per week. Ham sandwiches and PB&J. Pizza and chicken nuggets. We wing the rest.

SO I am feeling the pull to eat healthier! Thankfully, Ashton had gotten used to eating semi healthy and hates fast food and either wants Subway or makes me cook!

NOT rude at all, hope you're feeling better today.:goodvibes

Lori - I wish I could comment but I have NO experience with girl stuff so I can't help at all, boys are a whole other kind of monster.;)

We've just started trying to get back to healthy eating in our house too. I'm amazed that you were really doing all that from "real scratch"! That's a lot of work, but so worth it for your situation. I'm going to have to compare prices on the natural meats & the organic ones. Still not sure if we can swing it. This will be a good time for me to get Alexis's Mom to be a little more consistent with at least the milk & eggs. Her Mom Chris, is trying to lose weight & eat healthier herself. She sort of flip/flops on the organic stuff for Alexis. But Alexis is in such a quirky eating pattern right now. The only consistent thing for her has been pasta. She claims she doesn't like "meat" any more, but then will ask for hot dogs or sausage! But won't touch a McD's chicken nuggets! She has been doing a little better on eating some veggies though, so I guess not all hope is lost.

Boys & girls sure are different aren't they! Years & years ago, I did child care for my nephew & a neighbor's son. They were both 2 at the time! Man that will wear you out fast. Just trying to keep them from destroying the house, the toys, & each other was quite a task! One time while I put clothes in the wash, my nephew covered himself with Desitin from the top of his head, all in his hair, to the bottom of his toes!!! This is the child who screamed during a regular bath. Y'all have no idea how hard it is to get Desitin off of a screaming squirming 2 yr old boy!

Too funny! :rotfl: :rotfl:

I don't know if either of you have the freezer space, but have y'all tried the local Farmers' Markets for chicken & beef? I know the BR market has had someone who raises free-range chicken, and I'm fairly certain they also have someone selling beef. Getting a half- or quarter-calf would probably be cheaper in the long run than Whole Foods. Of course, you'd lose some convenience, but it might be worth checking out.

Have to agree with Kathy....I'm glad I don't have to deal with the drama (I am one of 3 girls, so been there, done that), but I have a feeling my boys will be bringing home their own special problems soon enough! Hang in there, Lori.

I haven't been to any of the local markets in a while. (Early Saturday mornings, you know) But I don't remember ever seeing fresh chicken or beef! Anyone over this way been to one of the farmer's markets lately?

On the kids, due to my limited experiences ;) , I've always thought that boys were harder in the early years, but then easier as teens. Girls being easy early on, but then the teen years being downright scary!

The early Saturday mornings are tough for me too. We're lucky enough to have a mid-week market as well, but it ends before I knock off of work. Grrr.

The food section of The Advocate usually has a weekly list of the vendors who are participating in the local markets. Would that be something you could find in the Picayune? That way you'd at least have a name to reference.

They don't usually list the specific vendors. I'm going to go try & look it up to see if I can find anymore info! I think we do have one market on Wed afternoons, going go check that too! Thanks!:goodvibes

I posted the recipe for that jerk marinade on WFDT for you. I am definitely going to use that one again, it was really good!

Hey y'all!

I'm kind of down today as I found out the total to fix my car- $1000!! :faint:  But it has to be fixed, so there it is. Ugh. Our trip is still on- it is a quest now!

Sheryl- Lori has great info on the eating healthy/organic bit. I won't go all into it, as that was part of our training at Whole Foods. But she's absolutely right about the organic meats- just buying natural meat will do just fine. It is hard to find truly organic meat. I just wanted to add that Whole Foods has a great multigrain pancake/waffle mix that is easy to make. It is a 365 product and is $2.29. I use it to make batches of waffles and freeze them for convenience- just heat them in the toaster oven and they're great! And local meat/produce/dairy at the farmers markets is almost as good as organic- they just haven't gone through the hoopla and expense of getting the organic label. (Whole Foods buys some of their produce through these same local vendors, particularly seasonal local stuff).

I found more info on our local markets. There are links to the other area markets on the CC site also.

Thanks, cajunmommy! They do have one poultry/meat vendor at the German Coast Markets in Luling & Destrehan! Now I just have to get there!

Thanks. I think I have that mix in the fridge! Really sorry about the car, 1000 bucks! Ugh is right!

Thanks. When she called to tell me the total (the mechanic is a woman- go women's lib!), she could tell I was shocked and asked if I needed a moment alone. I'm getting over it, but ouch! Hopefully there will be no more expensive surprises anytime soon (stay away hurricanes!).

the mechanic is a woman! That's cool, hopefully she'll treat you right! :wizard: Really, no more surprises! let's not even mention the H word!

I'm finding things are getting tight over here, not just gas but groceries are really climbing & the stock market is just diving! It's just not pretty.

Oh man, the stock market is just UGLY!!!! I try not to even look at it any more. I'm really starting to get worried about the economy because my friends are talking about how tight things are getting too.

I hope things look up in 2009!

Well Bob keeps a really close eye on our stocks. He's used to it he can handle the ups & downs, unlike me, it makes my stomach turn. But I get really worried when I hear & see him getting really worried. That tells me it's really getting ugly. But it's probably more of a concern to us, with Bob getting so close to retirement/disability.

:cheer2: Louisiana Knights win their first game of the World Series 12-7!!! Kyle pitched 5 innings, coach pulled him when the score was 8-3, wants to save his arm in case they fall into the loser's bracket.:confused3
