Merry Christmas Ya'll! Riding the Rails to WDW in December PTR!

Yes, it's wonderful to make the last payment! :cool1:The only thing we have to pay for now is our transfer from the train station to POP and we can't pay for that until we are picked up! We won't need money for food because we have Free Dining too!
School is fine so far-teachers went back to work last Monday and we started our staggered entrance this week-so far, so good!:yay: Friday will tell the tale-we will have all 30 4K for the first time, but I know everything will be fine!:cloud9:
hope school went well! ;)

hope school went well! ;)

School went much better today-thanks!:thumbsup2
Still waiting to hear from a fellow DISer who rode the train to WDW last week! Hope everything went well!
I'm going to several book stores this weekend to see if they have any travel books for Amtrak. I'll post a note about the ones I buy and if they have some good info. in them!:thumbsup2

Hey everyone! No luck finding books on taking Amtrak. :sad2: I'll just order on Amazon instead!:thumbsup2
I did come across a wonderful book in the travel section entitled Weird Carolinasby Roger Manley. For all my friends in SC and NC it is a very interesting book! Several articles are for places in my own back yard!!!!
Let me know if anyone else buys it or has read it-I'd love to hear your comments!:thumbsup2

did you hear from your friend yet? ;)

did you hear from your friend yet? ;)

Sorry it's been awhile, but yes, I finally heard from her and sad to say they had an awful time on the train!:confused3 The train trip for her and her two children though was 24 hours, so it was a long ride for coach. They also were a party of only 3 which meant she had to sit with total strangers for most of the trip. She said the train was very cold( I had heard this previously) and you could hear every snore, cry, whine, etc. The bathrooms were not very clean, so I am already prepared with Lysol Wipes and spray!
I felt really bad because I was the one that suggested the train for her trip in the first place!!!!:sad2:

We are still planning to try the train once anyway-good or bad it will be an educational experience for our children!:teacher: Our trip is only about 9 hours and part of that will be during the middle of the night. If we don't have any major delays we should be okay. I've already gotten travel blankets and pillow for the kids so everyone should be nice and snug! We'll already be dressed in warm clothes anyway since it will be the middle of December. The kids can go to sleep in sweats so all we will have to do is wake them up enough to get in the car around 1:30/2:00AM and they can sleep to the train station which is about 35 minutes from our house. I may let them sleep if it's not too cold in the car until the train arrives, especially if it is delayed. It's a very small train station located behind a hospital. The parking lot is only steps from the door of the train station-I would be able to see every car in the parking lot from inside!

I love train rides! I'm a FL resident, so it's much more convenient to drive 2.5 hours, but my sister lives in Charleston, SC, and that's how we usually visit. I've never gone with kids, though, but I hope you have a good time of it. Subscribed, can't wait to hear more, hope the school year is shaping up nicely so far!

Glad to have you aboard!!!:thumbsup2 My niece and her family live in Charleston as well as half my relatives!!! My maiden name is Cumbee and there are lots of Cumbee's in Charleston. My niece and her family are going to WDW the end of next month for Halloween and their 10th wedding ann. They aren't taking the train though, just driving down.
Can you share your experiences riding Amtrak? I'm sure everyone would like to hear and share any tips you could with us please!!!:worship:

I'm in. I can't wait to hear how the train ride goes. From here up in Maine it would take way too long. ;) Looks like we will be leaving just before you arrive. POP is awesome. We have stayed there for our last 5 visits. We are staying at POR this coming trip because there will be five of us in the room.

I can't wait to hear more!

Glad to have you aboard! We have stayed at ASMO's our last 3 trips so we really wanted to try something new! I'm glad to hear you like POP so much!:woohoo::santa::woohoo:

Joining...

We've thought about the train from Penn Station, but it costs $750 and takes a day. We could get tickets on AirTran for $760, it's just the point of laying the cash out for it so we're just going to drive.

P.S. we'll be at the MVMCP on the 16th too!

Welcome aboard! Maybe we will run into each other at MVMCP! I've asked TruBlu on another thread to see if some of us can get together to say a quick hello on the 16th! Have you subscribed to the MVMCP thread?
Question: Was the $760 for a room too? We are riding coach and it's only costing us $302.00 roundtrip with a AAA discount.

Nope, just coach seats, no discount.

At 1 pm on the same day, there's a Dole Whip Meet in MK at Aloha Island. I forgot where the link is, but you can look it up on the Dis Meets board.

I can't believe how much more expensive it is for you guys! :confused3 I have seen the Dole Whip Meet, but we probably won't go into the Magic Kingdom until at least 4 or later, depending on when they let MVMCP participants in. :santa:

OK everyone! Per advice from a friend I have three things purchased for our trip on the train-Lysol wipes, flushable wipes, and air freshener!!!!:rotfl2: Truth be told, I actually found the Lysol Wipes in a resealable bag instead of the cylinder container at BigLots(lots easier to pack) and the flushable wipes and small bottle of air freshener in the Travel Size section in our local Walmart!:thumbsup2

You will be glad you got them!!! Thankfully I'm not a germaphobe or anything like that, but having ridden the train from Jacksonville, FL to Jesup, GA once, and to Charleston, SC a few times, I can tell you that the restroom situation is usually not amazing, and certain odors may permeate the entire car depending on who is in it and where your seats are located.

I've always ridden by myself as a young adult visiting friends and family, and when you have a stranger sitting next to you, it is always a good idea to have something to occupy yourself with - usually a good book for me, or my portable DVD player.

It is usually cold - I've ridden in July and November and both times it was freezing. In July I actually got out my bag (I always just carry it on) and pulled on sweat pants and a hoodie over my tank top and shorts and was still chilly, but I do tend to run cold.

For me, the seats are not at all uncomfortable, but I have heard horror stories of old and damaged seat cushions, etc, that made sitting for upwards of 6 hours unbearable. Some people like to bring a seat pad, it just depends on how much cushioning you like.

That's all the tips I can think of for right now having ridden the train a couple of times, but I usually just fall right to sleep between stops. Hope some of this helps!

I just saw you started a pre trip report! We were talking on the Amtrak thread on the Transportation board while you were thinking about and booking your train tickets a few months ago! Glad to see you're all set and ready to go. I hope your experience is better than your friend's. That's a bummer. Can't wait to hear all about it! And pictures....tons of pictures....

well sorry your friend had a bad experience, but like you said- 9 hours compared to 24 will be a piece of cake. hopefully you can manage just fine. lol at the lysol, wipes, and odors permeating the rest of the car.....gross! lol.......it can't be any worse than a plane though, right? :confused3:rotfl:
