They come in the store all the time looking for a christmas present. They have no idea what they want, except it has to be perfect and inexpensive.
I ask a few questions on what the wife/girlfriend/sister wears, wants, has already. Almost always they have no clue. Does her purses have one handle or two, what color does she normally wear. How about size? Bigger, smaller, wider, deeper? "Dive in" or organizer?
Does she have a lot of handbags, or just one she uses constantly?

They just don't know. I ask what colors of clothes do they wear? They don't know.

So ladies, unless you are naked, the guys really don't care what you have on.

Am I right guys?

I worked in a clothing store one Christmas and faced the same thing! Dads were the best, you could always get them to buy lots for their DD's!

aaahhh, your post has reminded me of the "sweater dress" DH bought me for Christmas 9 years ago. This thing was long, down to my ankles long, had little pearls ALL OVER it and enormous shoulder pads! It was a body hugging fit and see through to boot. I'm getting mad at him just typing this!

That's why I never buy clothes for DW. I would never let a woman talk like that about me behind my back. Why is it we are always put down by women if we do not know every little detail of your things. Do you know what type of golf clubs graphite, titantanium , or we have' what kind of fishing reels we like or which type of car we would like to have or what . To you women shopping is like a sport right? So get to know all our sports stuff too.!!!! Until then please do not put us down until you get to know or lives too.

I know, my DH is so totally hopeless when it comes to buying anything for me..............I have to be with him to point him in the right direction................it's so annoying too as I don't get any surprises:(

just gotta love male bashing....LOL

if a guy doesn't shop for his Lady, he's no good..if he does shop,,he does it wrong...

if he does it really well,,and has a good fashion sense... then women wonder if maybe he's gay...sighhhhhhhhhh.

You go joe!!!!!!!

And as a guy that knows the kinds of clothes that DW likes to wear, the jewelry she likes to get, perfumes she prefers, and the candy/treats she loves to get - I resent all of 'us' being lumped into the dumb bafoon catgegory. Some of us are caring and thoughtful and do try. Give at least some of us a break.

I stay safe and only buy DW Jeans...
And something to where to bed a time or two...:teeth:

I always thought that it's the thought that counts when giving a gift, not how much is spent, or whatever,,but the fact that someone cared enough to take the time...

it's funny I often hear of men who will have their secretaries or a female friend do their shopping...their wives know this and always say, it would mean more to me if he took the time to go shopping himself..the gift wouldn't matter,,what would matter is that he CARED enough to spend the time on me......are you ladies telling me this is no longer true....that now the thing that matters is that he gets the right gift...???

My hubby just buys me fine jewelry.... :p

Very hard to go wrong there!!!

Of course this year since we just got back vacation and because we bought a full size pinball machine (something Dh has always wanted) we are not buying gifts for each other....

BUT................ my birthday is next month.... no getting around it then.. off to the jewelry store for him.... ::yes::

all I wanted to say was what some of you posted already. Male bashing sometimes get out of hand. IF we bashed women like this we would be call Neanderthrals. I do buy my DW clothes because I do have a idea what she likes. But the clothes the varinces sizes of women clothes are just out of wack. Plus it takes my DW a whole day to decide what she wants and I think she does not expect me to pick out the perfect dress in say a hour that I would spend in the mall? I do not expect her to pick out that perfect suit, sweater, or shirt that I WOULD like without any reservation? I think not.

I think you've hit the nut of the complaint: the LACK of thought that goes into selecting a gift. Just getting a gift and giving it, while showing that you at least remembered it was a gift-giving event, does NOT show that thought went into the gift.

What is so difficult about paying attention and taking the time (and thought) to select a gift appropriate for the recipient? I think that's what most of the women here are complaining about.

And in regards to your comments, joeokw....I can STILL tell you the type of golf clubs, car, fishing equipment, and computer games my ex enjoys....and we've been divorced for 5 years!

And just a helpful hint to those gentlemen still shopping: A vacuum cleaner is not a gift. It's a household purchase. (Guess what my ex gave me for my birthday one year? LOL)

I am truly fortunate in that my boyfriend *is* a thoughtful gift giver. He's given me some truly amazing gifts. For example, I collect vintage food tins (the kind that people would commonly buy that item in, not things like Xmas cookie tins). He found me some fabulous ones for my birthday this year. Last christmas, he gave me a gift certificate to my all-time favorite store to browse but not buy in (because everything is so expensive.) I loved being able to buy stuff there for a change!!

So, there are some fellas who DO pay attention. But I must agree that the vast majority do not. *sigh*

Chris doesn't get me clothes as gifts. He knows what I wear and what I like though. So if he ever did, he'd make a good choice. I think he has pretty good taste.

But I wonder about the frustration vented here from the ladies. Is it so much about the ideal gift or just that some (not all) men just don't seem to notice the little things about the ladies in their lives?
