I can't tell you what to get.....still experimenting with that for my DS
But he has had the rotar heads before and did not like them. He said after awhile, they pull instead of cut......even with changing the heads every 6 months.
We are trying the one of the foil shavers next (his Christmas present).

I found this at consumers report:
Editors say foil shavers are better overall, including the Braun Activator 8585 and Panasonic ES4001. The only acceptable rotary model is the Philishave (Philips) Sensotec HQ8865
the top three shavers are the Braun Activator, Braun Syncro and the Philishave/Norelco Sensotec/Spectra.

No electric, in my experience, gives a shave anywhere near as close as a blade. (Actually, I shave with a Norelco Tripleheader electric as a pre-shave, and then shave with a triple blade. Manages to stave off the stubble until, oh, 2:00 PM or so )

Braun with the self cleaning unit. DH has it and loves it. Electric razors take a while for the beard to get use to and work better with electric shave.

I've used a Braun electric razor for about 7-8 years. I'm on my second one. I have one of the cordless models. I've been very happy with them.

Another Braun user here! Actually, I've been using the same shaver for about 12 years now and it's been working great! It is a foil shaver because I never thought the rotating head shavers gave a close enough shave.

I used to use an electric shaver but I found I get better results with a blade. The electric razor heads would get hot after awhile and it was not comfortable to use. I do use the trimmer attachment to maintain my goatee, or van ****, whichever you prefer.

I have a Norelco and it works fine. My biggest suggestion is to include some lotions and pre/post shave splashes. Because if he isn't used to a electric razor, he'll get nasti razor burn the first couple of times.

Norelco fan here...........they're all I've used in 30+ years............they last forever....my newest one is so old that it has a cord!

I do not know where the one poster was getting their information... But, I would have to recommend a Norelco triple head shaver over a foil Braun type model any day.

I bought my DH an expensive Braun a couple years ago... And, side by side, head to head, the Norelco triple head beats it hands down.

The Braun type shavers work by vibrating the cutter-blades back and forth just underneath the foil. Because this is the way it works, the braun that I bought my DH is loud and it vibrates your hand off!

The spinning Norelco blades do not vibrate.... They are whisper quiet!!!

Also, for anyone with any curly type hair in their beard, it is hard for the foils to pick them up and shave them. But, with the rotary Norelco heads, with those grooves, they will pick up any hair, even if it is curling back in to the skin.

I even saw all of the above points on a GMA segment, comparing different types of razors.

Too bad I didn't see that before I wasted the money on that Braun. My DH immediately went out and bought a new Norelco to replace his old one.

Me too.

I used an electric razor for years, until I realized that they all stink. I was replacing them every 18 months or so. All crap.

I've been using a Mach 3 Turbo for about 6 months. It's a faster and quicker shave, and I don't think I've cut myself once with it.

That must have been my problem - I had a Braun for a while, and it didn't work for me at all. (Very curly beard here!)
