we are going up this week for a couple of nights and wanted to know if you have any tips, etc for me. never been so I don't know how getting around is and also what's fun inexpensive things to do?

Be CAREFUL around or near the airport/Graceland... It's dangerous on the outskirts. It is also where the "red light district" is.

It is warm and beautiful right now in Memphis.

Walk on Beale and take in the sights, there's always something going on at night(but don't venture into dark alleys)..go to Mud Island and park and look at the Mississippi River, walk along the river. The Zoo is not cheap, but is one of the best in the country (tripadvisor agrees...and we have pandas). Graceland (which is extremely safe during the daytime) is expensive, but you can still see it from the outside, take a marker and write on the wall. Eat some wonderful barbecue at Corky's on Poplar (although some prefer Interstate BBQ or Neely's).

Don't know the costs, but there are tours of Gibson Guitar Factory downtown, there's the Rock and Soul museum downtown, Sun Studios.

Check out the website of the Memphis Tourist and Convention Bureau.

Every time there's a Memphis thread, people join in to bash us--crime is way down, and this is a lovely city to live and visit.

Go to the Peabody Hotel and watch the duck processional! It is sooo cute - and free!

The do it twice a day I believe - when the ducks come downstairs in the morning and when they go home in the evening.

It is an AWESOME city!

But... Are you telling me you'd walk around on Brooks Rd. after dark? You would really go a block or more off of Elvis Presley BLVD?

The OP asked a question, and that was an honest answer.

Hell, I live in Detroit! I love it here too! Would I walk around certain places? No. We are on The First 48 as well... ;)

These are some great suggestions, especially the zoo. They've really done a marvelous job there and we always enjoy it when we go. We wanted to see the Rock and Soul museum on our last visit, but it was closed on the day we wanted to go. It's on our list for the next time. Although I've never been to the Civil Rights Museum, I've heard good things about it.

In addition to these, I'd recommend the Pink Palace Museum. We like to go there (doesn't hurt that it's less than a mile from my sister's house) and the kids really enjoy the exhibits, IMAX and planetarium.

While I'd have to respectfully disagree with you on Memphis being a great place to live, I do agree that there are some hidden gems there that make it a nice place to visit.
