Memory Card Error Photo Recovery

We just returned from a family trip to Disneyland Paris where I took a ton of photos and video, but on our last morning in the park I got a memory card error message on my camera (Canon sx230 hs). Afterwards I was unable to take more photos (no big deal we only had 1 hour left).

My big fear is that I will not be able to recover the photos that are on the card. I just tried to insert it into the card reader on my computer, and the computer doesn't even recognize that it has been inserted...

I really don't want to lose these photos... Does anyone have any ideas? I am in Romania and I have no idea where I could possibly take it for professional help...

Good luck! I hope it works out that you get your pics and that you used more than one card so that you have something to look at while you resolve the card issue.
