Hi,

I am a newbie and have a question. My apologies if I am in the wrong forum. We have a small point contract and now will be adding on, currently in ROFR. Can I make a reservation with the current points I have and then switch them to the banked points I will be getting when I close on the new contact. The new points expire soon and I am afraid that I will lose them. If I wait for the contract to close I will have to travel within 30 days of closing. Thanks...

If your reservation was made at 7 months or less (or the new points have the same home resort) member service should be able to reallocate the points used (i.e. Use the banked ones first). However if the use year for the new contract is different you can't combine points from 2 memberships for a single reservation so you would need to have enough to cover the whole thing or split up the reservation (I think the other option is to do a point transfer but I have never personally attempted that). I'm confused though about your last statement. Is your trip right after you close? You said you would have to travel within 30 days of closing or lose them-the expiration would still apply if you had them reallocate the points. Also if your trip is less than 31 days from when you close and gain access to the new points I believe modifying the reservation (for the point reallocation) might result in the points originally used become holding points-honestly I would call member services and give them your specifics a head of time and see what your options are.

If you get your new points within 30 days of your current reservation, and MS switches out the points, the original points are turned into holding points. Holding points can be used, I have used a bunch, but it is much harder to do so.

To your original question. If the new contract is the same home resort as the original contract, MS can reallocate the points if the reservation was made within your 11-7 month window. If the contracts are different home resorts, the points can only be reallocated if the reservation was made in the 7 month window.

The points are a different resort and use year. The seller's use year is September so they need to be used before August 31st or they expire. I am just afraid that by the time we close there will be nothing left in inventory and I will be left with points I can't use. I would be making a reservation today for August 2016. I am giving the process 3 months from the time of offer acceptance until I can actually make a reservation. Is that about accurate?

If you're within 30 days it won't help you much. The best it'd gain you would be more time to use holding account points. I'd reserve with your current points but not banked/borrowed but possibly cancel at 31 days to avoid holding account points or have plans to use holding account points. You won't be able to sub the new points anyway as they are a separate contract but you might be able to cancel and rebook. Maybe you could delay closing long enough to use the points first and let the seller make you a reservation. Or you could be DVC to bank them as a one time exception.

Does Disney ever allow points to be banked twice? I know they have made exceptions to the banking rule-we were allowed to bank points when we closed 1.5 months before our use year ended but they were current use year points. If I understood the OP correctly these points had already been banked from last year.

I know they've done it but I doubt it's very often. This is whey people need to discount certain points when buying resale.

Good to know-I hadn't heard they would bank points a second time but I haven't been around as long as you have :)

All you can do is ask and I wouldn't count on it. It's best to have your ducks in a row when you you have limited options and not much time.

So I'm in somewhat the same boat. Currently waiting with Jun 15 pts coming. I've made reservations with Jun 16 pts that I have. Same resort, both Jun contracts, so as long as I receive the points before the end of Jan, I should be able to reallocate/use the 2015's and bank the 2016's ?

Yes, MS will very likely do that for you. If you get a CM saying no, just call back.

It should be easy as long as the contracts end up linked.

This exact same thing happened to me recently. Member services were not helpful... I wanted 10 days at Aulani, and was "holding" some of those days with limited availability with my current membership (didn't hold all 10 days as I would have had to borrow points and then they would be stuck in this use year). Because my new membership (with expiring banked points) has a different use year, when I finally closed on the contract and got the points in my account, they would not reallocate the points, and instead only would book the available days. This left me with 3 days booked on my old contract and 7 days booked on my new contract with the banked points. They made me waitlist those 3 days with the new contract, so when someone else cancelled, thankfully my waitlist came through and then I could cancel those days that were now double booked on my old membership. They said because it was a different use year/membership, there was no guarantee they could "grab" those days when I cancelled, and there was a chance I would lose the booking. I complained and asked for a supervisor, and she said they may have been able to do it if we were direct purchasers, which is BS... My husband was going to call back and lose it with them if the waitlists didn't come through quickly.
EDIT- oh and it is my understanding that if you change which points you use for the booking within 30 days, the previous points you used to hold the reservation will become holding points

Nor should they have been in this situation. Technically and legally these are separate and unrelated contracts. About the most flexibility you could get as a single owner of separate master contracts is transferring banked borrowed points. In this case they could have transferred points to the old contract then swapped them out IF they were made at 7 months or after. They'll "never" do it to bypass the home resort booking window.

The original booking was made after the 7 mo point, so I was not asking to bypass home resort priority. I was under the impression they would only transfer current use year points, but wanted to use up my new contract's banked points (like the OP)... are you saying they will transfer banked points? That would have worked so I wouldn't have had to waitlist.

Sometimes they will make an exception for a single owner of multiple master contracts. You might try again if you still have the points available and it still improves your position.

So Disney exercised their rights, so no June coming. What happens if I get a contract with the same home resort, but different use year. Will I still be able these 2016 points and get my 2017 points back?

I'm new to DVC but did a ton of research before I bought...I recommend being patient and finding a contract on the same Use Year to make things a bit easier. I understand that some people a strategic in their Use Year, but most treat them like 2 completely separate contracts (without transferring points between them).

They will be treated like totally different owners. You can use them independently or transfer from one to another but likely will have to all and not be able to do them online if you transfer.

These would be 2015 banked points that I would be getting so no transferring, right? But could I call and get them to use these points and give back my 2016's on the other use year so I could then bank those? Reservation made in 7 month window.
