I want to try Megabus for the first time. I am thinking about sometime in May. They are now booking until March. Does anyone know when they generally open up to include May. I want to try to get the dollar seats. Does anyone know how many of these they offer on a bus or how I would go about trying to find a coupon code? There are seven of us going. Is it impossible to get seven seats really cheaply? The next thing I have to look for is a reasonable rate at a hotel in the theatre district.

Thanks.

I don't have advice on booking, but your post caught my eye because my dh was just telling me about a coworker who took the Megabus from Detroit to Chicago for $1 each way (the highest fare for the route is $30!). I've lived here all my life, and until dh told me about it yesterday, I didn't even know it existed!

Dh's coworker recommends it but cautions that they really pack people into those double-deckers. But for the price, you can't beat it!

When booking for a larger party, you may get the first 2 tickets at the lowest fair, 3 at the medium fare and the rest will be at full fair. They only sell a certain # of seats at each price. The majority of the seats are the full price. You would need to catch it the first day that your dates comes out. Same with the ride home. Good Luck.

Megabus is a bus that goes to and from certain destinations. In my case, I want to go from Boston to NY. I have never taken it myself. I have only heard of it from these boards. I am hoping to get the unbelievable cheap seats that they offer.

They have double decker buses going from boston to NY? I thought that they were just sight seeing buses that did that. Anyone know? That would seem very overwhelming traveling that distance packed into a double decker bus.

Ours is from WNY to NYC. Sometimes you get a double decker, most times not. There has never been more that 25% full anytime I have been on the busses.

If it is windy and you get a double-decker, I do recommend the bottom floor though as you can feel it move.

You have made me feel a little bit better. Thank you. I was picturing something like in those movies where everyone is hot and sweaty and stuck to eachother and there are birds in cages and so forth!!!! Get the picture that I am trying to portray???? Yuck. Thanks.

I have never had anyone within 5 rows from me, and if I wanted I could have moved it was that deserted. In the front of the bus they have a seat that can accomodate a family with a little table to play cards etc. I have never sat up there, but they always look nice.

The busses are always clean, and the bathrooms always have the essentials. The seats are comfy and you may want to take a pillow with you depending on the length of the trip. Most of our busses are now wi-fi compatible so you can get online for free if you have a laptop.

I can't say a bad thing about any trips we have taken on them. Our ride is a bit longer and includes a "food" stop. The drivers are always very nice and ask the passengers if we prefer any specific food places to eat.

I just checked prices the other day for a NYC to DC trip for a friend...almost any weekend in March I could get her down and back for $8 or $9 each way. That's CHEAP!

I think way less than that. Just for kicks I just went onto the site and put in Boston to NYC for THIS Saturday, returning on Monday. The seats are $17 going, $13 coming back. That's $30 TOTAL for round-trip. I also went all the way to the payment page and the only additional fee is $.50 for a reservation. I could have paid for the entire round trip for $30.50.

So op, I'd just check every few days to see when your trip opens...but if you miss it by a few days it's still a very reasonable trip.

I've used Megabus twice and love it. Both times traveling from Baltimore to NYC. Super cheap, clean buses, nice drivers. Heck the tolls alone would cost more than the fares!
One caveat, they aren't exactly "timely", meaning your departure time is usually a "guesstimate". It can vary, but the great thing is if you show up early and there are seats on an earlier departure they will let you on.
The last time we traveled in October, we paid a TOTAL roundtrip for 4 people of $37.50. Not each........TOTAL for 4. Parking for 1 night in NYC is more than that!

I've taken two round trips from Boston to NYC on Megabus. The first was a regular bus out of South Station. The second time was a double decker but it had been a while and left out of Back Bay. I don't remember the first trip but the last trip my kids and I were alone on the top deck. I was also surprised to find seatbelts. We stopped in Hartford CT on the way back which I wasn't expecting. If you aren't familiar with the drop off/pick up location in NYC drop off is block or two away from pick up location but on the Boston end it is the same.

Thanks for the info, will def be using the bus soon. Really want to see Lion King in NYC with Grandsons.:thumbsup2
