Mega point-holders, please indulge me

I'm curious.

If you have, let's say 2500 points, what is it that makes you say: "I really need to buy 400 more points"?

Is it wanting to go to Disney more frequently? Better accommodations? More points to rent? I want to stay at WDW for 2 straight months?

I'm asking as a moderate point-holder. My family would rebel big time if I tried to go to Disney any more frequently than we do. This keeps a lid on how many points I can use (financial considerations aside).

Ive always assumed renting in addition to visiting frequently. Looking forward to hearing what the mega point holders have to say.

I am not the audience you asked for (we have 310 points), but I think if I were in that position I would consider if I have a very large trip coming up at a specific resort and wanted or needed a specific room and either needed those points or needed a supplement. I am sure folks pick up contracts with the sole purpose of renting the points, but I couldn’t bear to part with my precious points that way 😂

My 9 year old just asked when we were staying at the Cabins in CCV. Ive created a monster and may need to be mega point holder.
That's on my bucket list :)
There will need to be some heavy banking and borrowing!

I'm not there yet, and probably won't ever be, but I have a theory. Normally, DW & I stay in studios and every once in a while we indulge in a 1BR. But for those who travel with a much bigger group of families & friends, have you taken a look at the points charts for the 3BR Grand Villas in some of the more expensive seasons? You could burn 1000-1400 points for a single week. Congrats to those who can afford that.

Right, that's what I'm getting at.

Is it that you are going with a massive number of people for 2-3 weeks every year, booking Grand Villas?
Or do you go 10 weeks per year in a 1BR villa?
Renting half and using the rest?
Do you have 10 kids and want to them each a small pile of points?

I can't fathom having that many points to begin with! My family unit is smallish, and there is no huge desire on their part to go to Disney more than 2-3 times per year.

Definitely not in that category, but i would assume its nicer accommodations, Grand Villas, Cabins, Bungalows, Theme park views, etc.

The easiest and most basic reply would be that when you have 2500 points a 400 point add on is not that many points. Just like if you have 250 points a 40 point add on seems like not that much. You need to think in people with lots of money mindset. Not the average person mindset, when dealing with these type of large numbers. People with 2500 points are not staying in a standard studio, they are staying in a GV. There is a reason that the GV's actually have no availability often.

My limitation is not access to money, but rather what I'd be willing to spend on this type of product, and what my travel needs are.

I'm just fascinated by the psychology of it, I guess. I'm fiscally conservative in general, so I'm living vicariously through you folks.

I’m not your target demo for this question, but am equally curious!

Anecdotally, it seems like a lot of folks with massive portfolios treat their entire extended family to lengthy trips/reunions…or use DVC as a snowbird strategy (which I love!)

We also have a smaller family unit. So even with a fraction of the points, we’re able to stretch them staying in studios (I’m slightly embarrassed to admit that we’ll be spending 5 weeks at WDW over the course of 2025 😬 but also 😍). There’s no way we could spend more at this stage of life without compromising our travels to other places, which I’m not willing to do.

And while it sounds great in theory to splurge on larger rooms, I just can’t rationalize it for the two of us - at least at this point. Ask me again next summer after we stay in a 2 Bedroom with family! 🤣

Interesting question. I might be your target audience for it: 2400 points and I just signed/paid for another 426 at the Poly tower - trying to be done with rescission before 10/15. So, why do we need that many points? A few reasons, most of which are already covered by others in this thread:

- Typical stay is 3 nights
- we don’t stay in studios. Minimum 1 bdrm villas when just the two of us, minimum 2 bdrm when any of our kids tag along. If I can’t find a villa somewhere, we pick a different weekend to go until one is available. Preferred views or better.
- can’t take it with you, so I wanted enough to divide amongst my 4 kids.
- strong preference for cabins and bungalows, and we live 3 hours away so we are at WDW once a month, unless it coincides with a DCL cruise which is every other month.

The foregoing explains the 2400 points. So why the additional 426? Because I like shiny new objects. The Poly tower is magical to me for its location and views of MK. I refuse to stalk the reservation system to get TPV villas in December, so the fixed week solves that problem.

Notice I did not list renting points as a reason. I have no doubt I will get to a point where we just can’t spend 2826 points, and It’s nice to know there is a rental market available, but I hope to make an earnest effort to use them myself before I turn to that market. You only live once - gotta make as many magical memories as you can while you can.

Thanks for this answer. You certainly check all the boxes: point-heavy accommodations, monthly trips, love for shiny new objects, and more than the average number of kids! Congrats on your points!

I suspect a lot of these large point holders live closer and have a lot more PTO approved than I do. Or are retired and living the snowbird dream! Occasionally I see posts about taking humongous extended families which sounds great, but also stressful. My family luckily is small enough I never have to worry about that!

As someone who owns ~2500 points and is not against the idea of more points, I'll break down what a 'standard year' is for us in our plans and scenarios that I foresee could lead to another add-on.

Planned 'standard year' for us, using a little over 2500 points:
  • 4-night weekend in a Grand Cali 1BR in Late Jan/Early Feb
  • 8 nights in a CCV Cabin in May
  • 4-night weekend in a Grand Cali 1BR in September
  • 4-night weekend in a Disneyland Hotel 1BR around Halloween
  • 7 nights in a VGF or RIV 1BR over Thanksgiving (followed by a 7-night cruise)
    • 1 night in a RIV 1BR post-cruise
  • 4-5 nights over Christmas in a CCV 1BR
  • 3 nights in a Bungalow, including NYEE
  • 2-5 nights in a BCV 1BR, including NYE

But we have flex ups/downs that add variety to the years:
  • 8 nights in an Aulani Ocean View 1BR every 2-3 years (uses ~400 more points)
  • Long weekend at BCV 1BR for July 4th (uses ~100 more points)
  • Do a land/sea stay in May: 4 nights in CCV Cabin + 4-night cruise (uses ~400 fewer points)
  • Drop down to a 1BR, or try a Treehouse, during our May stay (uses ~400-500 fewer points)

Foreseeable reasons we might add more points:
  • If we need more Poly points to secure the Bungalows for NYEE (we have enough Poly points to book 2 of the 3 nights, so if the 3rd stops making it to 7m we'd buy more Poly points)
  • If we want to increase the frequency of our Aulani trips, we'd need more SAP (we have plenty of AUL points; currently we offset Aulani trips with land/sea trips in May)
  • Future points chart adjustments
  • If we want to occasionally extend our WDW stay portion of our Thanksgiving+7n Cruise trip and instead do a shorter cruise, we'd need more VGF and/or RIV
    • There's a non-zero chance we make our Thanksgiving stay VGF every year, and if so, we'd need more VGF points
  • We might buy a contract for a family member to travel with us over Christmas
  • Future resorts might really appeal to us (an Adventureland-attached-and-themed resort would probably be an insta-buy and I sure would be interested in trying a Houseboat or Cabin at Reflections, if those actually happen)
