I went to a remarkable band and choir concert last night as my son was playing tuba in the High School Band. The concert featured a guest composer, non other than Canada's premier composer, Howard Cable. His accomplishments are too numerous to mention, for example, he's worked with Ella Fitzgerald. In community concert bands, I've played arrangements by him through out the years.
Well, he was in our Vancouver suburb last night!!! Another high school organized his 1 week trip out here to help conduct and teach high school students.
I worked with him in Toronto in the mid-eighties. What a treat to talk with him after the show in my little hamlet. He was as polished as ever and a marvelous raconteur. It was a highlight to thank him for all his great music. and... he's 85 and looks to be in his 60's.
Thanks for bearing with me as I share my excitement and a piece of my life. This has motivated me to practice again as his music was such a joy!
