A small group of teachers in our school met with our principal and voted to have Meet the Teacher night on Sunday................school starts on Tuesday, Monday is slated for us to get ready. Traditionally, we'd have it on the night before school starts OR the week before. The principal has said that it will be held on Sunday, and preprinted postcards have been mailed to parents.

Lots of the teachers aren't happy to go in on Sunday, but I wonder if the parents will be okay with it or equally unhappy, or just skip it?

What would you as a parent do? Would you go? Would you complain?

Edited because some thought I meant I might not go........I will be there.

Of course I would go. Having it on a Sunday wouldn't bother me at all.

I'd definitely go. If I were a parent and went in to meet the teacher and the teacher wasn't there, I'd be annoyed.

I would go without hestitation. I think alot of parents will go, especially those who work M-F and can't make every single school event. You may see some new faces.

NO!!!! Boy those teachers must have a really useless union. NO one has to work on Sunday just claim it interferes with your religious beliefs.

Even if that isn't true?

Lots of people have to work on Sundays. Maybe not teachers as a whole but lots of people have to work on Sundays.

Just curious-Why is Sunday different than having it sometime during the week before as long it isn't a religious issue?

Of course, I'd go.

At our elementary school, Meet the Teacher day was always Sunday afternoon. It was a great time to have it b/c fewer parents work then. At the middle school, it is on a weekday afternoon, which is a much less attractive time IMO.

Sure, I'd go. Just make an appearance, smile, and shake a hand or two. Doesn't seem like much to ask of a parent for their child. :goodvibes

I probably wouldn't want to do it if it were a Sunday or a Saturday since I really make a point of reserving the weekends for my family...that's one of the reasons I became a teacher after all, to have weekends and summers for my own children.

However, I know that there are two nights a year where teachers are required by contract to show up at school functions, so if that is the night they picked, I'd be obligated to go....

although I wonder if it is against our contract to schedule it on a weekend...it probably is.

I definately wouldn't go on a Sunday afternoon. I AM in church at that time. So I would decline for religious reasons. I don't usually attend the Sunday evening service so I probably wouldn't complain about Sunday night.

At the risk of sounding sarcastic which I am not being SUNDAY is a day when we spend time with OUR families. MON to FRI is the work week. What if a teacher had something planned and had to not go. Then all the parents would be angry.

I would go when ever they had it. My DD's is on a Tuesday from 1-3pm. School starts the next day on Wednesday. I would think more parents are off on a Sunday night than having it during the week.

I would go. I believe you should always get to know your child's teacher at every possible opportunity. Now if you're already IN church and can't make it, that's different. But even the most religious people I know can find the time to go out to eat, run errands, head to the pool or lake or other attraction, do housework, cut the grass, go to sports practices or games, etc.

I would be able to do Sun. afternoon, but Sun. night would interfere with church and I would have to decline (as a teacher). As a parent, I wouldn't mind too much it being on a Sun., but we have it during the day the week school starts and I prefer that, since we make a day out of it with the kids.

Of course we'd go! I'd prefer it on Sunday instead of crammed in after dinner on a weeknight.

It is sort of a religious issue for me. Not that I advocate doing absolutely no work on Sunday -I try so hard not to be legalistic, but for our family Sunday is a special day. We worship, enjoy being with each other, and plan activities for Sunday evenings that are restful -sometimes involving other people from our church. In short, the world is not allowed to encroach on our Sundays. You won't find me doing my grocery shopping or washing my clothes on Sunday; you won't even find my kids playing on any sports teams on Sunday; and you sure won't find me or my kids at a school on Sunday. They may be doing homework on Sunday, but not participating in some activity that should be scheduled some other time. It is off limits to the school.

I wouldnt have a problem with it. I might find it odd, but I would go.

Gee I guess someone should tell my DH that he shouldn't go into the office on the occasional Saturday to meet with people. Of course he doens't get paid but realizes it is part of the job, expecially if he wants to get anywhere in life. Thank goodness our area teachers do a meet on the weekends. Bless them for caring!

No I probably would not..but most likely just b/c it is an unusual day to conduct school business and my Sundays are spent relaxing.

In all my years of going to school--school business was conducted Monday through Friday and with extra-curricular exceptions on Saturdays as well.

In general I think that it will impact the attendance for the event and you will find that there may not be as many people as there would have been.

Not in our area would attendance be low. Our community rates very high in terms of parent participation. While most moms are SAHM around here, the dads are working. Because of this they would love to be able to spend an hour chatting with the teacher. There really is nothing stressful about it. It is very relaxing. I don't consider meeting the teacher to be work. Last year we met on a Saturday and then we as a family went out to dinner as usual. We plan on doing the same this year. No big deal for us.
