I have been sick as a dog for most of the past month and after my 3rd visit to the ER last night and a CT scan with contrast and other tests I was finally diagnosed with Colitis due to E.Coli. The Dr put me on antibiotics, zofran for nausea and told me to follow an all liquid diet for at least 3 days to give my colon time to heal.

After reading every soup label in Publix today I have found about 3 varieties that I can eat (I'm allergic to onions) and picked up some pudding and jello. For lunch I am having a Chick Fil-A milkshake.

I can tell this is going to get old very fast. I'm not a fan of yogurt but I did pick up a few of the new whipped flavors to try. DH suggested Ensure but those don't really sound too appetizing.

Any other ideas out there? I get migraines if I don't eat so I am waiting to see if the liquid diet will be enough to keep those at bay.

Yogurt will help your tummy feel a little better, get probiotic if you can. Antibiotics kill the good bacteria as well as the bad, the yogurt helps with the good getting back where it belongs in your intestinal tract.

Ensure has a lot of flavors (butter pecan even) so it might be worth a shot. Otherwise Yoplait makes frozen smoothie packs you throw in the blender with some milk. Instant breakfast has some good premixed flavors.

DId the Dr say anything about clear liquids vs full liquids? He really should have given you a little more direction as to what to avoid.

I have spent long periods of time on liquid only diets and it is hard to keep a variety. I always drop weight like crazy so my GI always suggests (high calorie) milk shakes along with ensure, boost, drinkable yogurt, etc. I also would eat chicken broth and tomato soup. And LOTS of coffee drinks at Starbucks to keep my energy up.

I think Boost tastes better than Ensure, personally. If you just have to go 3 days, I am not sure I'd invest in much other than a couple cans of broth and some milkshakes at ChickFilA.

The Dr said full liquids not clear thankfully.

Starbucks sounds good - love their chai tea latte.

Ensure has some pretty good flavors. I like the dark chocolate milkshake and the vanilla milkshake. I plan to try the milk chocolate one at some point. Unfortunately I think the strawberry one is nasty. I was skeptical about whether I would like ensure at first. But I needed something to supliment my meals and increase calorie intake. For me, it did the trick. Good luck!

Although I can eat solid foods, due to other health reasons I have to drink Boost.. I love the stuff - could drink it by the gallon!! The vanilla is best - tastes like French vanilla.. Chocolate is "okay" - stawberry is horrible!!

Chicken noodle soup - just strain it and freeze the noodles and chicken for use another time..

Lots of "cream of" soups: not many "chunks" in there you would have to avoid..

Lots of juices available.. Are smoothies acceptable?

Sorry about your issues - and I hope this temporary diet will result in a permanent cure!

What about some home made smoothies? My DH likes them with plain yogurt, banana & strawberries.

DH went out and bought a blender tonight so we could try some smoothies. The kids love them too so it won't be just for this. We did blend up my favorite bean soup tonight which tasted fine but looked horrible. I am hoping that at least gives me some protein.

As expected the migraine from not eating came on full force early afternoon but I was able to stop it with a Treximet.

The Dr really didn't give any specifics except to tell me a full liquid diet for 3 days and if I am still not better than to go to see the Gastroenterologist. Granted he was an ER doctor and they were quite busy last night so he didn't really have time to explain much. I was surprised at the diagnosis but since I stopped eating solids the pain has disappeared. The symptoms really felt like a severe gallbladder attack but I had my gallbladder out when I was pregnant with DS almost 4 years ago.

Thanks for the well wishes. :goodvibes I just want to feel human again.
