I'm thinking of enrolling in a medical coding class. There is a local college that offfers it but the location is in a high school in an area I don't want to be in at night. I see they also offer a course online. So my question is: Are online courses good for these types of classes? And is anyone a medical coder and is it worth the 1400.00 investment to take the class? With everything going up, I need to work at least part time. Thanks for any feedback.

I'm really kicking myself for not taking the course this year. It's offered as a 9 month course at our community college, and the hospital I work part time at now would have paid for almost the whole thing. I'd be close to finishing it now too. (ARGH! Why did I talk myself out of it?)

Anyway, it's a great skill to have if you want part-time work, and it's possible to do from home as well. The way diagnoses are coded can make a big difference in the amount of money the provider collects from the patient's insurance, so I understand that many doctors pay for the service on a percentage basis.

Wish I could you give more specifics, and I don't know anything about on-line courses versus traditional classes. I just really regret not taking the course myself this year.
