lol

Just got my DVC info in the mail.

If I were to buy in December 2002, how many points would I have available to me come this May 2003? (assuming I bought 150 points). Would I have the 150 from 2003 available plus be able to borrow from 2004's points? Would I get any points from 2002 at all?

Unfortunately I don't see this info detailed in the DVC info.

Thank you! You are all very helpful. Maybe too helpful, lol...the DVC brochure info was pretty much old news! :)

It depends on the use year. If you were to have an April use year and you had the 2002 points. You could have those banked for 150. Your new points in April of 2003 for 300 and you could borrow 2004's for a total available of 450.

If it is a December use year. You would have the December of 2002 points and could borrow the 2003 points for a total of 300 in May of 2003.

Does it say anywhere or did you talk to someone who told you what your use year would be?

Depends on the Use Year you buy. You can probably pick a couple different ones. Pick the oldest Use Year available - meaning if you have a choice of Sep, Oct, Nov, etc, pick September. This does mean that you will have more dues - they are prorated from the Use Year until January, but a few dollars a point are well worth it.
To keep it simple, if you bought in December and took a December Use Year, you would have 150 points from Dec 2002 and could borrow 150 points from Dec 2003 for your May 2003 trip.
If you buy resale, all of this changes. Once again Use Year is important, but what is banked and borrowed from the contract would be more important.

If I recall correctly, my use year would be December, but I could pick as far back as October (I think). I'll have to clarify that with someone this week.

Thank you!

Someone else help me with this, you want a use year a couple of months ahead of when your purchasing so you can bank the points prior to your use year and have them available after after your use year date, right? You'd want the use year to be january or after to be able to bank the 2002 till January points and use them in conjunction with the after Jan2003 points, right?

I might be wrong, I was just hinking you don't want the use year a couple of months after the current date, my thinking is that you loose out on a years worth of banked points, right?

I hope I haven't got this wrong, I'd hate to give you incorrect advice.

When we bought BWV in October 98, we had an April use year. We got all out 1998 points upon signing AND then all our 99 points in APril 99. Doesn't DVC still do that?

DVD sells you a contract where the use year begins 3 to 5 months before month of sale. In other words, if you buy in December, you are likely to get August (or possibly Sep). You then get points issued as of August 1, 2002 with another allotment coming August 2003.That initial allotment from August 2002 will be your "current" points to use for a trip in May 2003 as your current use year will be from August 1, 2002 to July 31, 2003. Thus, you will be able to use those points for a May 2003 trip. You will also be able to borrow from the 2003 use year that begins August 1, 2003. You will not be able to borrow from the 2004 use year that begins August 1, 2004.

Disney is somewhat flexible on use year sold along as you are going forward not backward. In other words, you could buy a Sep or Oct use year and get points that are issued the first of the month in either of those months in 2002. However, it is likely not going to be flexible so that you can buy June or before use year (there is no July use year) so you get points as early as June or before from 2002.

We just bought and recieved our paper this past week to sign. Our use year is June and we weren't given a choice of which month we wanted. June works for us though.

I'd look at all of the DVC literature and then buy a RESALE!!!!!! Why pay retail prices when you can get the same product for much less??????? Unless you are solely interested in BCV:D ....

Melrosgirl:

To answer your original question: If you had a October, November or December use year, you would have the 150 points from 2002 plus you would be able to borrow your 2003 points for a May trip so that you would have a total of 300 points to use.

You could also get an April use year and likely get the 2002 points. While you MIGHT only be able to book 25% of them, you'd get the 2003 points in April and could borrow from the 2004 points if need be. You could ask the guide what they could do as they are sometimes flexible on the banking window for new sales. You wouldn't be able to use the MB likely.
