My DW and I are thinking about flying in on a Friday or Saturday, getting a weekend rental car and staying off property for a night or two before checking into POFQ on Sunday. I want to return the rental Sun afternoon or on Monday and ride ME back to the hotel and then when we check out have ME take us to the airport. Is this do-able and how does it work?

No problem, your DME reservation is tied to your resort reservation and it doesn't matter how you got to the airport or where you go after.

Just make the DME reseravation for your arrival day about the time you want to head to the resort. It is easier for the CM's if you have a flight so I usually just pick one that arrives around the time I want to leave MCO.

if your rental is with alamo/nat you can just drop off at S/D or the car care center. If your staying off-site around disney why drive all the way back to MCO.

What you will want to do is take your luggage to POFQ and have them hold it while you take the rental car back. Otherwise you will have to haul the luggage from the rental car to the ME bus then from the bus into POFQ. Who are you renting from? There are several rental car agency's in the DTD area that you could return a car and either have the rental company take you to POFQ or walk to DTD and catch a bus to POFQ?

I we know who you are renting from we can point you in the right direction and save you from have to do clear to the airport. And yes you can still use ME bus back to the airport once your vacation is over :) even though you did not that the ME from the airport to POFQ.

Part of the plan already was to move the luggage from the off-site motel/hotel to POFQ before returning the car.

I rent only from Enterprise these days, having had bad experiences with both Alamo and Budget. I think they have an agency near DD but I'm not sure if I need to deal with the headache of a return not at the originating office at MCO.

Enterprise has a location at the Royal Plaza Hotel on Hotel Plaza Blvd. Its right across from DTD so you can easily walk back there and take a bus to your resort after returning the car.

We have rented "many" "many" times from one location and returned to another location in Florida and never had a problem! In Florida they do not charge a fee for dropping off at another location. The return at a different location is not "any" different than taking it to the airport. Trust me!!!
Plus it will save the time. 30 minute drive to the airport, then waiting to catch the ME bus, and then another 30 minutes ride to Disney or longer depending on how many resorts you have to stop at before getting to your resorts. So in the end you could ended up spending almost 2 hours to return the car. And like the PP said the Royal Plaza Resort that has an Enterprise location inside is very close to DTD. It should only take you 10 minutes to walk to DTD and catch the bus to the resort. Just something to think about.

This may sound silly, but does the Royal Plaza offer a shuttle to DTD or other points directly on the property? I use an ECV or wheelchair most of the time as I can only stand/walk for about 3-5 minutes before needing to sit and I am slooooowwwww even at top speed. :rolleyes1
