I already have my MDE account and booked our room and tickets (annual pass).
We are going to add our son's family to our trip and pay for and manage the reservations and fastpasses.
Should he set up an account, book the hotel and tickets then add us to his friends and family list?
Or do we just add him onto our existing MDE account?

You could handle it either way, but if your son ever plans to go to WDW again, then it would be better if he set up his own MDE account. That way the MagicBands will stay with his family and he could plan future trips on his own.

We booked and paid for a trip for our son's family. Our son has his own MDE for his family and we booked the reservation and handled the dining reservations and fastpasses for him. All he had to do is pick out the colors for his MagicBands. I called Disney reservations to make the room reservation for him and to pay for it using my credit card. Disney is used to having people pay for their family members, so this was no problem. They will make sure that the correct MDE is used for the reservation. You will have him listed as family who share everything and will be able to use your MDE account for managing everything except colors of MagicBands.

But if you don't think your son's family will go to Disney again, or your son really doesn't want to bother with the details, then just add the family members to your account. It will work either way.
