May sound like a dumb question, but...I'll ask anyway

This is only our first year owning a DVC so sorry for the dumb question.

As of right now, we have used ALL our points for this current year, so for next year (beginning December 2007) if we were to book a room (at SSR) but something came up and we had to cancel, would we be able to use those points for say a May 2008 trip?

I'm thinking we would be able to, but I just want to be sure!

I'm guessing that you have a December UY, and so, your '07 December UY points can be used from December 1, 2007 through November 30, 2008 without any banking or borrowing. If you cancel a ressie 31 or more days out in that time period, any of those points can be used for another ressie within that time period, no restrictions, or they can be banked within the banking period.

Just remember that if you cancel less than 31 days out, the points will go into holding, and will be much more difficult to use.

Two rules to keep in mind:

1) Your use year doesn't affect when you can make reservations. Don't confuse rules about when you can use points, with rules about when you can make reservations.

2) If you make a reservation to use current-year points at a DVC resort and cancel more than 30 days out, the points go back into your account as if you never made the reservation. HOWEVER - if you had to bank/borrow points to make the reservation you can use them in the same use year, but you can't un-bank/borrow them.

So for example, assuming you haven't borrowed any of the points you will get in December 2007, you could call now to make a reservation with those points for February 2008. That reservation would use current-year points, so as long as you cancel more than a month ahead of time, it's as if you never made the reservation. You could then use them to make a reservation for May 2008 as long as you are within your 7/11 month window. You could also bank those points for use from December 2008 - November 2009 as long as you do so within your banking windows.

Now if you had already used your December 2007 points, you could call now and make a reservation for February 2008 using borrowed December 2008 points. If you have to cancel, you could use those points for a May 2008 trip. However, the points could not be unborrowed or banked and would have to be used by November 2008.

I'm not sure if I understand your question, so I will add something else. If you are talking about using your current year's points (which expire November 20, 2007) because you cancel a trip the only way to use those next May would be if you banked them after cancelling more than 31 days in advance. This assumes that you are not past your final banking deadline or over your banking limit at the time you need to bank. If you borrowed into the current use year, those points would expire November 30 with no option to use them next use year (i.e., after Dec. 2007)
