This was the best trip we have ever taken! And everyone agrees - from our kids (DD's age 3 and 7) to my parents who are 70+. Calm seas and perfect weather!

Got an upgrade! :wizard:
Found out before we left home, from catagory 9, deck 2 to catagory 5 deck 7. Had a verandah and LOVED it! Booked 14 months out through a local TA here in Washington.

Hyatt at MCO
Got a senior rate (because my paretns were with us) of $123. Beautiful hotel, great service and SO convenient - especially since our plane ws 1 1/2 hours late and by the time we got to our room it was after 10:00 PM. Would definitely stay there again.

Florida Tours
picked us up at 9:00 AM. Prompt and courteous. Clean van, had car seat and booster for the kids as requested. Paid $120.00 plus tip. Got teary when I first saw the ship!

We were the third family in line at the Port, had to wait at the gate as the terminal wasn't open yet. That was fine - recognized a fellow DIS board member and time flew as we chatted. Once inside check in was quick. We took turns walking around the terminal and ran into more Dis board members.
Next thing I knew we were boarding, our names were announced and I got goose bumps - we were finally there!! Deposited DH and DD's on a couch and went to make Palo ressies. Got first choice for dinner (Tuesday) and brunch (Thursday). Had APL rotation. Went to Top Siders and sat outside to have lunch. Went to make Spa reservations - should've gone right after Palo ressies were made, all I wanted was a Well Being Massage and booked it for 10:00 AM on Key West day. Not my first choice, but it was fine. Kinda hard to decide when to do it, not wanting to interfere with character Bfast or brunch ressies.

Stateroom 7608 & 7610
We received these rooms as an upgrade and were very happy to get the verandah. Wouldn't re-book them, as I felt they were a little noisy due to being so close to the elevators. Water pressure in 7608 was really low, but not in 7610. Made a comment about it on the survery. Really liked Deck 7 and being Aft. Never had more than 4 foot seas (I don't think), but was a little surprised at how much movement we felt - but it didn't bother any of us. The Secret Deck 7 was great - and it was almost always empty!

Family of the Week :wizard:
The pixie dust continued on Sunday morning when we woke up with a note on our door saying we had been chosen as Family of the Week. This meant
daily surprises from room service - chocolate covered strawberries, cookies, cheese platter, etc. Could also order off the dining rooms menus and have it delivered to our room, but never did.

Key West
met family and friends for brunch. The new Pirate Museum was a little spendy at $12.95 per adult, a little on the small side but VERY well done! The "real" pirate inside is a dead ringer for Capt. Jack Sparrow - I did a double take, thinking it was Johnny Depp! He had the voice down and everything. pirate:

Sea Days
The pools were crowded, no big surprise. I believe the Mickey pool was closed 3 times during our trip due to potty accidents. I liked being up on deck 10 at the goofy pool as you could hear live music. The adult pool was heaven, the very few times I got to enjoy it! :goodvibes

Kids Clubs
My DD 7 like the club better than the lab. My DD 3 wasn't keen on being there without her big sister. We went to Palo for brunch and my parents took DD 3 to the club - they let DD 7 stay, even though her group was in the lab. The counselors are VERY accomodating. It doesn't hurt to ask! :flower: Not to be missed , as far as DD & is concerned, making "Flubber" and the "Graduation" show - they get Mickey graduation hats and T-shirts. A little hard to make the Graduation show as the kids must be in the club by 4:00 and that's on Castaway Cay day (had to leave by 3:00ish to get her showered, etc.)

Shows were great! Golden Mickey's and Disney Dreams are not to be missed!! Especially Dreams!

Grand Cayman - Capt. Marvin's
Booked the Sting Ray City Tour with Capt. Marvin's. $88.00 (for the 4 of us). Very nice boats, great staff. The weather was windy and the seas were choppy, which was disappointing. Should've taken sea sick meds - didn't get sick, but was close! DD 3 was a little scared of the rocking boat and didn't get in the water. DD 7 did and did great, despite getting knocked around by the waves a bit. I was a little intimidated by the size of the sting rays. Got in the water, but hung back from the crowd. One lady on our boat was stung - just too many people and the rays swarming around. They poured vinegar on her wound and I guess that helped (I wasn't even aware it happened, my husband told me about it, so it must not have been too big of a deal). The crew brough a small sting ray to the back of the boat for the little kids to see and touch (who didn't get into the water). Very thoughtful! Would definitely recomend them! The island has lots of damage still visible from hurricane(s).

Cozumel, Dolphin Discovery, Chankanaab Park
At almost $100 per person, this was pretty steep, but SO worth it! Booked though Disney. Just loved the experience! 15 people in our "pen", 3 dolphin and 2 trainers. 30 minutes standing on a platform in the water. Bought pictures of each of us with the dolphins and the DVD. This was one of the highlites of our trip. We really enjoyed Chankanaab as well - the park is beautiful and everything was very clean. Would do this again!

Castaway Cay is the ultimate! My only complaint is that you don't have enough time there!!!

Debarkation and Customs
You have to get off the ship way too early in the morning ;) out of your stateroom by 8:00 AM. We found our luggage quickly, thanks to some bright yellow pom poms my DM made for each of our suitcases. A porter helped us and we were through customs so fast I wondered if it was legal!

Budget Car Rental was a little on the slow side. They had two shuttles running and we were lucky we were the only ship in. The older gentlemen is still working there and is very slow. If another ship was in and you were trying to catch an early flight out, this might be a problem.

Radisson Resort at the Port was nice. $175 for the 2 King beds whirlpool suite with hide a bed couch. Was fine for the 6 of us. The pool and grounds were very nice, the room a little on the noisy side - could hear doors slamming, etc. Next time would like to try Ron Jon's instead.

Best Bets:
*Buying a "Passporter"
*Reading the Dis boards
*Having a Dis Board Meet - we had 10 - 12 families attend. Lots of great folks, some were on our excursions, which added to the fun. We got together again for Pirate Night. Very fun!
*Over the door shoe holder came in very handy. Could find everything.
*Plastic zip lock bags and ordering sandwiches from room service. Did this on excursion days and it was very helpful not to have to worry about finding food.
*Bought the DCL insulated bag to carry our sandwiches in. $10.00. Very handy.

Didn't re-book. :sad1: Next trip will be to Disney World for a week, hopefully in 2007. Maybe after that a Disney Cruise in 2009. But we WILL go again! :goodvibes

My thanks to all of you. This trip wouldn't have been what it was without all of the helpful advice I got here. If I can help anyone, please le me know!

Thank you so much! I really enjoyed your trip report.

What exactly is a "Passporter"? Probably a silly question, I've heard it mentioned plenty of times but really don't know what it is. Thanks.

sounds like you had a blast!!

tell me how big is the insulated bag you bought ? is it lunchbox size
or how many coke cans would it hold??

If it is the one I saw onboard in January it would hold a six pack easily maybe even a few more layed across the top....a bit bigger than a lunch box.

:cheer2: Thanks for the great review. My Disney cruise isn't until next Summer but after reading all the wonderful tips from this site, I realized its not too soon for me to start planning some of my trip details.

I have a question on your Dolphin excursion you booked with DCL. Was your Dolphin experience a "swim with the dolphins" or was it just some interaction in the water and you only got a "kiss" from them? I ask because I read elsewhere that the DCL booked dolphin excursion was not the same as the Shoretrip booked excursion even though they are both in Cozumel and at the exact same park, and this didn't seem to make much sense to me. Also, the price seems to be just about the same. Could you provide me detail on your dolphin excursion as to how you were able to interact with the dolphins. I really want the excursion that allows you to ride with them, which is how Shoretrips describes it but I would rather book through Disney just for some added comfort if the experiences are the same. :earsgirl:

It was almost a great trip report...where are the pictures (just kidding)?? Sounds like you and your family had a great trip! Thanks for the exciting trip report. I can't wait for our family's name to be called out again when we embark the Majic or Wonder... :cloud9:

One lady on our boat was stung - just too many people and the rays swarming around. They poured vinegar on her wound and I guess that helped (I wasn't even aware it happened, my husband told me about it, so it must not have been too big of a deal).

LOL! That would be me! And no, it really wasn't that big of a deal...it just....well, stung. By the next day, if not for the scratches left behind - it's as if it never happened.

I was holding DS3 and while trying to make it back on the boat, got caught in the crew dumping the tail end of the bucket of squid into the water to feed the rays. We got swarmed and I stepped on a big one - he didn't much care for that.

Was the water not incredible????!!!!

And I concur with you whole-heartedly...absolutely THE best family vacation we've taken by far.

I'm laughing @ how parallel our trips were! DS3 didn't care for the club at all and the one night we went to Palo - DS9 checked into the lab as a 3/4 year old. As you said - they were VERY accomodating to that. And, I'm so glad we didn't miss Palo!!!!! The choc. souf. was to DIE for.
The waiter wrapped up the Tiramisu that he brought for us to "try" that we didn't touch....and we were quite the hit in the club when we gave them to the CM's when we picked up the kids.....

Did the Sea Lion Swim @ Chankaanaab and lazed by the little lagoon; and we also dealt with the Budget slowness!!!! DH finally just got on a van w/o us and came back to pick us up. He was back with the car before the next van even came! Verbal fights were breaking out on the line when we left...what a way to end a vacation :confused3

We were bumping into each other all the time - and not even knowing it! LOL

Definately great.....Can't wait to do it again.

hi lynn

great trip report- it was wonderful meeting you and bumping into you everywhere- i am still full from brunch :rotfl:

we had a wonderful time too!! didn't book again cause DH really wants to do Hawaii next......but we shall see!!

the actual capt marvin actually came on our tour with us very nice older man)..we were on the boat same day as you guys but the tour before- the water was way too choppy- for a minute there i thought i was gonna be swept away :earseek:

now, if only i could get my trip reoprt started ;)

Great report, Lynn!

It was great meeting you and running into familiar DIS faces everywhere!

We rebooked for 11/11/05 with two Castaway stops!

How exactly was the weather? Was it hot or very comfortable? When we went to CC and Nassau it was very hot. I know it would be more expensive to go when cruising weather would be considered "perfect", but its nice to dream isn't it?

Great report. Could you give more info on the dolphins? I really want to do the dolphins in Cozumel with our twin 3 1/2 year olds, but I have read on the boards that the water can be deep or you had to hold onto the metal fence. Do they have a good backdrop for the dolphin pictures? I take it that your 3 year old had a good time with the dolphins, I guess I am worried that I will pay for the encounter and they will be afraid and not want to do it. They keep saying that they want a kiss from the dolphin, but I am still a little worried.

Lastly, how was the park where the dolphin encounter is located? Did you look around. I have heard there are lots of iguanas there, my son would love that.

Thanks.

Hey Lynn....

Enjoyed reading your trip report and I look forward to seeing some pictures. We had such a great time meeting you and your family and enjoyed our Capt Marvin excursion except for the waves.

I'm going to start working on my trip report, so hopefully I can remember everything. :teeth:

Sounds like your trip was great. We can't wait til Sept! A couple of questions about Stingray City. I assume you booked this excursion on your own? How did you get transportation to and from the excursion? It was only $88 for all four of you, or each? Thanks for the information. I really would like to try this if my kids (9,6,2) wouldn't completely shy away from it. I think DD9 and 6 would be okay.

Sorry to be so slow in replying... it's back to reality, work etc. I hope I am answering all of your questions, if not, please let me know if I skipped yours!

Dolphin Encounter
The Dolphin Encounter was in Cozumel at Chaanknab Park (spelling isn't exactly right). We booked through Disney. It was almost $100 per person (kids might've been $90). We picked up taxis/vans outside the mall where the ship docked. A Disney rep. walked us over there and a staff member from Dolphin Discovery was there to meet the ship as well. It's about a 15 minute drive to the park. The taxi (both ways) and our admision to the park was covered in the excurstion price. We got free lockers to store our stuff, they gave us life vests to wear and we had a chat about how to interact with the dolphins - how to pet them, what not to do, etc. We got in a pen with 3 dolphin and 2 trainers (I think one of the dolphins was just learning how to do some of the stuff). There were 15 people in our group. We stood on a platform that was in the water - water level came up to my chest (I'm fairly short, just 5'2") against a fence. My older DD (7) kind of hung on to the fence as she really couldn't touch the bottom of the platform, but she did float, as she was wearing the life vest. My husband held our DD (3) and she was also wearing a life vest. DD (7) loved it. DD (3) really enjoyed it, but didn't want to kiss the dolphin, or have it kiss her, so we didn't get a picture of her. We look back on that and wish we would've tried a little harder to have the photographer take a shot. The trainers have the dolphins do various things and have them swim by in front of you so you can touch them. You spend about 30 minutes in with them. They take 3 pictures of each person - one of you kissing the dolphin, one of the dolphin kissing you and one of you with your arms holding on to the dolphins fins - kinda looks like you are dancing. The photos are very clear and very close up (so you don't notice the back ground - maybe only in the "dancing" one). After your encounter, they also show you a DVD they have taken of your group in the water. It is of the entire group, but they really do a great job of making sure they get everyone in it. Of course we bought one picture of each of us and the DVD. There is also a Dolphin Swim offered at that park. But I believe you have to book direct and not through Disney. Try looking on line at dolphindiscovery.com. I believe in that one you really swim with them, hold on to them, etc. I think there is a pretty good description of the differences at the web site. I would feel fine about booking direct with Dolphin Discovery - in our experience they are a first rate operation. We just choose the encounter because of the age of our kids.
Weather I thought the weather was perfect. High 70's to low 80's. The only time I was bothered by the heat was one morning in Cozumel - it was very humid and muggy in the morning, but by the time we had been in the water doing our dolphin encounter, and got out, it seemed better, not as hot. I have family in Florida and try to go back once a year. May is my favortie time of year to go. It's after spring break, but before most schools are out for summer break, so tourist places aren't as crowded. It's warm, but not so terribly humid yet. Just a personal opinion.
Hope this helps. Let me know if I can answer anything else!

We booked our Stingray City tour through Disney, not Captain Marvin. Don't know why other than I was just booking other excursions. Does anyone know if they go to different areas? :confused3 We went out at 1:15 and the water wasn't choppy at all. There were a few little rolling waves but nothing that interfered with our enjoyment of the stingrays.

Lynn,
Your report was great. So far I've just read everyone else's reports. I'm still trying to remember where I put everything before I left. Then this weekend we're havin Kennedy's party and next weekend going to Disney for her actually birthday.I'm going to get my pictures developed this weekend.
I'll mail that paper for you to get copies of the professional pictures.
Debbie :grouphug:

Dolphins / Chankaanb Park I forgot to mention, yes, we saw iguanas. One was very interested in our lunch (but kept his distance). The park is very clean. Really enjoyed it.

Sting Rays yes, we booked on our own. Capt. Marvin's office is about 3 blocks from where the tender drops you off, so we just walked.

Momeska, I'm not sure if all the boats go to the same spot, but I think they do. I know there were 2 other boats there when we went. Grand Cayman actually had a pretty good rain shower (albeit it short) after we came back in from the Sting Ray's. Once that shower moved through I bet the weather (and seas) were a little better. Lucky you! I was a little green!
