My 5 year old son, 85 year old grandmother, and myself, set out on the first West Coast cruise one week ago today. I'm just going to hit the highlights now, and I will try to add on as I regain my strength!

First, we got through the embarkation lines and onto the ship in record time and I do feel guilty about this, but my grandmother is very disabled and the staff took care of her. We were taken to the head of every line and were on the ship hours before many others (my sincere apologies to you all). So, if you are going with someone who has "special needs," USE them to your advantage. Seriously.

We got the APLAPLA rotation, and Animator's Palate is kind of cool but the music is WAY too loud and the "show" isn't all it's hyped up to be, but fun and worth it. But if you're going to Palo's you won't miss AP after your first time there; they don't do the color change again, in fact our second time it stayed B & W, while the final night was in color but it was the goodbye night and they came out with the flaming Baked Alaska which on its own is a fun show.

The pools are all heated so it doesn't matter what the outside temp is like, the water's a solid 85 F or higher. This can be good for the kids who will swim until they develop gills, but in hotter weather it will lead to overheating issues.

Go to the spa. I don't care what you do there, just go. I had two visits, one just to repolish my toes, and one full-on Sole Delight Foot Ritual including pedicure. Easily the best hour of my entire cruise. I've never been so spoiled in my whole life (and I am an only child, only grandchild).

The kid's club is intimidating for a kid who's just gotten out of school; my son felt like too much was being asked of him initially, but he did calm down and start to enjoy it, especially when they took the 5-7's into the Lab (the bigger kid's area). On our final day he wanted to go back, the only time he asked to; most of the time he just wanted to be in the pool or watching movies in the room.

We had some good movies in the theater; Ice Princess was very popular, and they also had The Pacifier, Finding Nemo, and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Among many choices I might add.

There was a different show in the Walt Disney Theatre each day with at least 3 showtimes. Sadly I missed every one of them but I heard good things.

Jellyfish in the water thick in PV, enough that they were clearly visible & obvious from my Deck 6 verandah. Check sea conditions before you sail, as a jelly sting can be at best uncomfortable and at worst fatal with an allergic reaction. Some excursions were modified due to the jellies and others endured with the stings (LegalBriefs, a member here, took 5 stings himself).

They take billions of professional photos each and every day, and sell them for $9.95 for a 6x8, or $19.95 for an 8x10. There are packages available as well at a slight discount. Character meets are scheduled but around the requirements of 20 minutes in, half an hour out; it can be tight to find the line, wait in it, then be told it's over before you get there. And, they do most of them during the two dinner seatings, which is hard on the kids with sleeping needs. Although I'd bet money most of the kids' bedtimes were either bent or completely tossed away this week (especially from some of the behaviors I was seeing! My own kid included!)

Motion of the ship obvious to me every day we went anywhere but I'm sensitive. Last sea day the worst as the ocean itself was bucking but also because we were going faster and that makes it worse. I've been off the ship twelve hours and can still feel it...or maybe that's just wishing I was still there.

The horn is neat but VERY scary for the kids if they are too close or not expecting it. I saw many kids reduced to tears over it (my son too), although easy to calm once they knew it was over.

PM me with specific questions and I will answer them if I can. I will also add more after I have slept!

peace
Rebecca

Rebecca--

Thanks for the report...Can you tell me more about the menus at dinner? I have heard that they have changed recently...

Thanks

The menus change every day. There are about 4 options in each catagory, appetizer salad entree dessert. The range included a salmon selection appetizer with a marinated, smoked, and something with cream cheese rolled up in it; shrimp cocktail; mixed spring greens salad with goat cheese croutons (yum); ceasar salad; cheese canneloni entree; veal chops; beef tenderloin; of course one night (Thursday) was the Captain's Dinner and everyone could have lobster, in Palo's that night we had it over a apple & pear risotto.

Each day, you can have either menu service breakfast in Lumiere's or the same buffet at Topsiders or Parrot Cay. The breakfast is basically the same every day. Lunches are themed each day, for example Italian or Oriental or American or Seafood. Buffet at Topsider's is fine. I would not recommend the sushi part of the seafood buffet, they really don't seem to have a qualified sushi chef, it was all rolls and the rice was like glue. But the other items were fine.

The kids menu have two sections of entree choices, the top part is the same each day (cheese pizza, hamburger, mac & cheese, chicken tenders) and the second section is other options, one night it had sirloin steak, for example. There's usually a fruit choice appetizer and a soup too.

One thing about the food on the cruise, if you're hungry it's your own fault. They will bring you pretty much anything you ask for. One night my son had steak AND chicken tenders. My server asked me how my seafood & pasta was and I joked that it didn't have enough scallops--and he brought me more! On the last night, I asked for and got half portions of three different appetizers, and two entrees, and he brought us a slice of Baked Alaska along with the desserts we had asked for. (I need to diet big time.)

Drinks are not over priced, as some have complained. They're just as much or just as cheap as any normal bar on dry land. About $4.50 for a glass of Asti Spumante; mixed cocktails between $3.50 and $6.00.

peace--

I agree the last day was a bit rough. I think I was hit harder since we had a room in deck 2 (lower = more motion?) the 1st 6 days the waves were between 1.5-4 feet, nice & mild, but Saturday they were closer to 4-8 feet, so the room creaked and I could feel the waves a bit more :sad2: But whenever I head up to deck 4-10 I was just fine, especially when we were outside.

Things definitely didn't run as smoothly as the east coast cruise, but then again, DCL has to deal with a lot more restrictions & it was the 1st time out.

The only real dislike I had, that can be improved would be how most of the gift shop items are still aimed towards Nassau, Castaway Cay & Disney World. Is Disney really trying to save a buck by not offering IMHO enough West Coast related gift items... and I’m talking items that are truly marked DISNEY/MEXICO not just the little piñata.

yes, Bingo is still available.

I am still feeling the friday night waves. I was on deck 7 and wow, It was hard to pack up my things, I was swaying so badly, and I DON'T drink alcohol, so it wasn't the booze. I am still swaying. It was actually the worst part of the trip. DH, said, as he sat there swaying with me a whole day later, that we can wait a bit for the next cruise. I am not sure exactly why it was so bad, but it wasn't fun. Loved the cruise. Loved the food. I noticed that they had food for the lighter appetites. My parents ordered off of that quite a bit. My very hungry sons, ordered 2 main dishes most nights. They are very tall and strong 13 and 15 year old boys, and they can put the food away. Besides all of the ice cream at scoops. And the hamburgers and cookies during the day. My 13 year old asked, when can we go back.... He said, I didn't even gain a pound on the trip, boy not me, I did....Even tho, I am still swaying I can't wait to go in a year. HOpe they will bring it back to the WEST. I would love to do another East Coast, but it is so nice getting to drive to the pier instead of flying.

that post cruise effect is just finally wearing off as of today. I kept getting the feeling I'm still on a boat evertime I was standing still.

but now I'm back in the office... and I think I prefer the motion sickness

We are cruising on the Magic July 9 and was wondering. We have Palo ressie on the friday night and will be missing dinner in the dining room. What will we miss at the last nigths dinner.

Last night dinner is the same in all the dining rooms according to our server...not much variety from previous nights' menus so nothing NEW that you will be missing, but you will miss the Baked Alaska show (and dessert).

The last night's meal includes the parade of flags and the presentation of the Baked Alaska dessert. We usually give our servers their tip envelopes on the last evening. Having said all of that, we have dined in Palo on the last evening 2 out of the the 4 times we have cruised. We go to the dining room with our kids and then go to Palo. The kids have dinner and we keep them company (we don't eat). We don't miss anything.

Welcome home Ellen! How was your week in SoCal? Your family was such a wonderful bunch to meet...I still talk about Katie giving her aunt the drawing from Ducky (what a special girl!).

Hope the Zoo and the Land were everything you hoped and more!
Chris

Hi Chris,

The kids loved California and would move there in a heart beat. Kate got to see marine animals and Brett got to see the penguins. (It's what they were hoping to do on their vacation before they knew where they were going). We went to the Corvette Diner in San Diego. Kate and Brett LOVED it! My nephew is moving to San Diego at the end of July. He will be attending Scripps for a masters/doctoral program. I told him that we would definitely be coming to California to visit.

We stopped in La Jolla for dinner. What a great place to live!!!!!!!!!!! We got to see the sun setting on the Pacific.

Anaheim was great. We loved DL and Calif. Adventure. Thanks for the advice on where to sit for Soaring Over California. That was an incredible experience. The fireworks at DL were the best I've ever seen. Tinkerbell "flying" around the castle during the fireworks show was so cool. I thought I was watching the beginning of The Wonderful World of Disney.

Bob met Michael Eisner in NYC this week. Bob pulled out his key to world card to show him. :rotfl2: ME wanted to know how the cruise was.

I can't believe our trip is over already. I got some cute pictures to remind me of the fun we had. We should have taken a group shot of the dissers onboard. Next time!

Ellen
