I updated page 55 for the Kids Thread - if any of the kids out there have disboard names and start posting to the kids thread, please let me know so I can include their disboard name on their name badge.

Hey Guys I know a few DIS'ers are conquering Rome on their own, (myself included)
I found a site that has some good info on the city as well as some cheap
walking tours for when we get there.
check out
enjoyrome.com
and see what you think.

Ok, I have started to make a packing list (just an excuse to think of our cruise ;) ) I need to know if the guys are wearing their tuxedos or just a dark suit :confused3 I was thinking that with just 1 formal night, it makes more sense to bring the suit, so, that DH can also wear it on the semi formal night. Does this make sense?

Help!!!

Well - I guess I'll be wearing a tux since I just went out and bought one. Actually, it was cheaper to buy it then it would have been to rent it for the Back2Back cruises. But the down side is that now we have to pack it.

There are two semi-formal nights, not just one. On formal night, you will see people in tuxes and people in suits and people wearing things you just couldn't believe ANYONE could consider formal. Wear/pack whatever you are most comfortable with!

Sue

Well Ken, I guess you and DH will be the two most handsomest (is that even a word?) men on board. I'm packing the tuxedo. Any other guys out there dressing up?

:)

Not fully decided on this one yet. I'm thinking that if hubby rents a tux, he won't have to bring a suit at all since lots of people wear the tux on semi-formal night as well. Then he only needs to bring nice slacks and one sports jacket for Palo or cooler nights. I am so into packing light! (Translation: the less he takes, the more room in HIS suitcase for MY extra stuff......isn't marriage great?)

This reminds me of a conversation we had over the weekend:
Me: Hon, we need to go buy the suitcases
DH: You mean, your suitcase, because my stuff fits in my carry-on
Me: No, I mean our suitcases
DH: I don't need a bigger suitcase
Me: Yes, you do. Where else am I going to put all my extra stuff and all "our" souvenirs.
DH: Maybe we should take just 2 small carry ons
Me: fine, I'll just buy extra clothes and an extra suitcase on our cruise
DH: Ok, we'll go get our suitcases next weekend :)

or more room on the return trip to pack in all those souveniers. :thumbsup2

One more reason to travel wtih a toddler. His clothing doesn't take up TOO much room in his HUGE suitcase and the diapers that go certainly WON'T be making the return flight... more room for souveniers! Excpet the fact that we have 9 Lumpys (heffalumps) to bring with us too! UGH! He NEEDS them ALL to sleep....funfunfun!

We bought new luggage for this trip. We went to the flea market and found the most god-aweful patterns we could find! We have a bright purple hawaiian print and a bright red print one! I get sick of checking tags because everything looks the same! Flea market luggage us cheep and actually lasts a while. But if it gets damaged I am not going to cry over it.

We made sure of the dimensions so that the luggage tucks nicely at the bottom of the closets in the room on the ship or under the beds.

As for formal nights. My DH and DFIL are probably just going to wear sports coats and white oxfords with a tie. Our toddler will probably be in a jacket and tie too. The last few cruises I have been on people went from tux all the way to jeans and a polo. It would be nice to go the whole tux route but that is a LOT extra to pack and worry about wrinkles. I have seen people use formal night to display their family togetherness and all wear the same color or style polo shirts and khakis.

TravelSmith or Chicos make NICE lightweight travel clothing. Some of the dresses are pretty snazzy with the right accessories.

Our vote, DON'T STRESS about it. Dress like a pirate for Formal night, better yet... WHERE YOUR TOGA! Hmmm, a formal toga! That just might work!

I've been trying to figure out what to pack on this cruise. It's completely different for us for two reasons: 1) We have to actually FLY to the cruise and 2) We're staying on both before and after the cruise. Since we're also flying within Europe (to go to Paris), our luggage is severely limited. You can take more to and from the US than you can wtihin Europe.

So... I think I'll just pack one dress and wear it every night to dinner. :lmao: I told DNana (my DM) that she was only allowed to pack three pairs of shoes: one for walking, one for dress-up and sandals. Do you know how hard it is to figure out all of your outfits with only three pairs of shoes???? :scared1:

Sue

DH, DS and DDad will be will looking smart in their new Tuxes.:cool1: I got them the Mickey MOuse tux vests from ebay. DH is very excited about having a formal night picture taken.

Sue, Don't go checking my luggage. I always pack too many shoes! I plan on wearing the same dress for formal and semiformal and then some variations of white capris with sweater sets for the rest of the time. I think we're leaving the pirate stuff home this time and I don't think the men folk will be getting into any togas.

We have only recently booked the DIS May 26 cruise and I'm desperately trying to catch up with all the posts. So far I'm up to page 75. We have a lot of research to do as we still need a hotel in Barcelona as well as booking tours.

This site is awesome. As it still might take some time to catch up on my reading, I was wondering if the wine party and Rome train group are still accepting new people. This is the first DCL for DW and I and we are getting very excited.

Thanks

Welcome aboard ronjoh! The best thing you can do is review the first post on page 55 of this thread and then give me your first names so you can be on the lanyard list, go to the webpage for the cruise list and PM Winotracy to be included in the Rome group.

Welcome!

I'll be glad to take your info for the suite party. Since you only have one post, you won't be able to PM yet. You can either wait until you have 5 posts and PM - or you can go ahead and post on the thread who is going. If kids are going, please post their ages.

Don't forget there are TWO semi-formal nights, not just one. I think I'm going to pack two outfits. One for formal (which I'll wear twice with two jackets) and one for semi-formal (which I'll wear once and then again at Palo's). Of course I'll probably spill something all over it and end up paying top $ to get it cleaned before the next dinner! I'm REALLY trying to think small, pack light, etc. In times past we've had one suitcase just for SHOES! I'm planning on one suitcase for DNana (everything), one suitcase with clothes for me and DD, one suitcase with all the other stuff (like shoes and cosmetics) and the final 4th suitcase with Christina's medical stuff. By the time we return, the 4th suitcase will be empty giving me tons of room for all those souvenirs! We can check 6 suitcases, but I can't see the two of us lugging 6 suitcases, 3 carry-ons, a stroller and a walker through the airport! Let alone finding a cab to take us to our hotels. YIKES!

I can't believe I only have 8 weekends until we leave. :scared1:

I'm sure you mean the equivalent of one suitcase each but you are going to split it up so each suitcase has something for everyone JUST in case a bag gets lost one person is not left with nothing.

ALso, three pr of shoes for the entire trip is definatly doable. The fashion police will overlook the shoes matching thing while on cruise ships :rotfl2:

Thanks Sue. We are a retired couple, Ron and Maureen. Just the two of us on this cruise but hope to take the DGrandkids on the next DCL vacation.
