Max Points You Can Purchase?

I've been contemplating buying into DVC for the last couple of years. As we're starting to have more disposable income, it seems becoming a dvc member may happen sooner than I hoped.

We have a larger family and I'd like to also use points some years for Adventures by Disney or the DCL. I know from research that I'd get a better deal on going through David's (or another place similar) to get the most bang for the points.

And I do understand the banking and borrowing options they have.

I plan on buying direct to avoid some of those separations between blue cards and white cards.

❓ Anyway, I know on the official website, they have up to 300 points. But could I opt for more all in one purchase? Or will I be forced to create a 2nd purchase?

You can purchase more than 300 in a transaction however, you may not want to. Purchasing smaller contracts will allow you to see them when your needs change. If you purchase 300+ in one transaction you will need to sell them altogether. We purchased 200 with each additional add on in 100 point increments.

Have you looked at how many points are required for either of these?

I briefly looked into ABD and even through David's, I'm looking at least 400. I may have read it wrong, but my initial understanding is that is per person. :/

That's part of why I'm looking into more than 300 at the moment, because even with banking, it would only partially cover the 2nd person, much less our kids.

But lol please tell me I'm wrong! I'd love for it to be for multiple people haha

Yeah that makes better sense now. Especially when @erionm brought up estate planning. I'm more likely to will it to the kids instead of reselling, so perhaps it is the better way to go here. 😃

Thanks for both your perspectives!

Nope, that's per person.

My point is that you should buy based on what you need to book DVC villas. Do not buy based on DCL or ABD, both of which can increase annually.

Buying DVC to use for ABD will cost you more money in both the short and the long run than actually paying cash for ABD trips. DVC has to pay ABD the full price for an ABD trip - so they essentially "charge" their members full price.

As others have said, buying multiple "small" contracts is better than buying big contracts. Contracts larger than about 250 points are hard to sell - so while you can maybe get one for less money, if you ever need to sell it it won't hold value. So especially if you buy direct buy a couple smaller contracts versus one 400-500 point contract. Resale - if you buy a larger contract as I said you can pay less, just understand if you need to sell you will likely get less as well.

Ah okay. So the "perk" isn't really that great then. Thanks for the heads up. Then I'll probably stay under 300 for sure now. 👍

If you want to buy a lot of points in one transaction, you can ask to split them in multiple contracts. So for example for 300 points you can have 2x150 contracts or 3x100. They would be easier to sell or split among your children.
For incentives, the total amount counts, so the only loss if paying for additional closing, which is very well worth the price.

You should buy it as 3x 100 max in my view or go to even lower denominations. Small contracts sell fast and at a premium resale.

I would personally do at least 2x 100 and 2 x 50 but probably go 6 x 50.

I have large contracts, and I'm happy with them. The downside to micro-contracts is that closing costs, while fluctuate based on value, have a floor of about $450 +/-. A 500 point contract will have closing costs of about $950 +/-, for comparison. I found the right balance for us to be 200-300 point contracts.

Small contracts may sell at a premium, but you pay a premium to get them so that point is moot. Large contracts sell at a discount relatively, but again the point is moot.

Small contracts do sell faster, but I've found that unless the contract is above $50k the market is pretty liquid. Also points available tends to be a huge factor in turn over time.... no one wants a contract they can't use for 2 years

You would think that DCL and ABD could give DVC owners a break, especially since they are all run by the same business unit and executive team. :sad2:
