Matterhorn vs Space Mountain

I am taking a group of teenagers to DLR this weekend. As a veteran WDW visitor but a newbie to DLR, I have a couple of questions.
1. What is the fastest way to Space Mountain? Is there a cut-thru like at the WDW noodle terrace, or do I have to go all the way to the hub and turn right?
2. Is one line at the Matterhorn generally less crowded than the other? Is it feasible that I could go to SM and get FPs while the kids go get in line at the Matterhorn? We will not be arriving until 9am.
3. Is there a thread here that gives a good itinerary for one day at DL?

Straight up Main Street and then turn right into Tomorrowland. There is no shortcut like at MK.

2. Is one line at the Matterhorn generally less crowded than the other? Is it feasible that I could go to SM and get FPs while the kids go get in line at the Matterhorn? We will not be arriving until 9am.

In the morning the line at the back (called the Tomorrowland line) is often a bit shorter because people see the Fantasyland side line first and just get in line there. We usually do the TL side.

Once you get to the afternoon and evening they close the FL line because it interferes with the parade route. So the TL side entrance is used to feed both the TL and FL ride tracks. Guests are given a choice which side they want to ride once they get up close to boarding.

3. Is there a thread here that gives a good itinerary for one day at DL?

Not really. And if there was one it would not be very good because things are so influence by Magic Mornings, DL opening time, AP blockouts or not, season, etc. IMO the best bet for you is to pay $15 and get RideMax. This weekend is the beginning of Spring Break crowds and RM can save you many hours. Even if you do not follow it strictly it can get you pointed in good directions. See www.ridemax.com
