It's not 'suspicious' that she was discharged w/o going to a rehab facility.

I had pneumonia about 8 years ago that knocked me on my butt and was in the hospital for 5 days because of it. It had spread quickly to both lungs, had a temp of 105, racing heart rate, couldn't talk, couldn't take but a few steps without needing to stop to catch my breath.

Upon admission to the hospital in the ER, the doctors were all talking about maybe needing to intubate me because my O2 levels were so low. Was on 2-3 IV antibiotics plus oral antibiotics for 4 of the 5 days, then oral antibiotics after that. I was discharged to recuperate at home. They sent a home health provider to my house to provide supplemental oxygen. I needed that for 3 weeks after the hospital admission ended.

I've got some permanent scars now in part of 1 lung thanks to that whole ordeal. I'm glad that Mary Lou Retton made it through. Going through that is real hell.

I think those of us that are surprised are because she was in ICU and intubated for at least some of that time (the suggestion from how her kids announced it led most to believe she was on it consistently). On top of that, 5 days before her release to home, her daughter said that she'd had a big setback and was still in ICU. The kids never added an update saying she was improving.

Obviously, people that donated do so knowing they aren't owed anything. But it seems in the world of internet panhandling, it would be nice to share enough to her contributors who went 5 days with no positive news when there surely was.

I was surprised at the glee and malice on this thread aimed at a sick woman. Folks could contribute or not. There are 1,000's of go fund me situations.
I'm glad she's better. I hope she continues to improve.

I pay bills online, there is a memo spot. My town charges high fees to pay property taxes with a credit card (and taxes are high), most pay via check.

No automatic debit option? I’ve had my taxes automatically debited for 30 years. Never have I wrote a cheque for them.

Most credit cards offer at least 2% or some other reward in terms of miles or points. You generally break even or come out ahead using a credit card.

They usually try to pass the credit card processing fees on to you. I haven't found one yet where it'd still be better to pay by card, though my card only gives 1.5% back.

I have everything possible on autopay, trust me. My town is so old school, most people I know actually drop off their tax checks 4 times a year at town hall. I pay my water bill via check too, and dog license. Oh, and checks for permits.

Nope, fees are definitely higher than what you would get back, same for college tuition, you’d have to be low on funds to pay with a credit card, definitely higher than 2%.

Not sure about that. Locally the fees are well above 2%. Closer to 2.5% - 3%.

Paying for large purchases with a credit card usually works out great if you are trying to meet a credit card signup bonus. The bonus usually makes paying the transaction fee worthwhile.

Getting those last few needed miles/points that then enable you to pay for an upcoming trip is very valuable to me as well.

I don't think it the sick part - I'm sure most, if not all, people here have empathy for health challenges. It's just that many folks are getting tired of people who refuse to take any responsibility for themselves- buy health insurance, live within their means, etc. Then they crowd ERs for routine healthcare creating issues for many others, just so they get it free and expect strangers to bail them out financially.

I don't mean to sound harsh, but seriously - an adult with means to earn a living, who specifically chooses to skip health insurance? There's just no excuse I can accept for that.
