We (4 adults, 3 yr old boy, and 8 yr old boy) will be staying at Cypress Harbour in less than two weeks. What area of the resort should we request?

It depends on what you want, I'd say.
If you want quiet, buildings 54-56 and 66-74 might be your cup of tea (with 66 looking like it might be within walking distance of the Island Pool).
I like building 60-62 so that we're close to the activity center and the much smaller Bayside Pool.
If you want easy pool access with the kids, shoot for buildings 64-66. I like the Island Pool best for kids.

The Clubhouse Pool seems nice but I get a more adult vibe from the layout, although that's really more my impression than anything else.

Also, buildings 52 & 53 are right next to the Clubhouse and Clubhouse Pool but also next to the walkway across the lake that brings you right to the Island Pool. Kind of the best of both worlds there.
It could get a little loud for the one or two nights that there are evening parties at the Clubhouse, but they don't last all night.

Hi Mike. Thanks for your advice. I requested near the island pool like you suggested. I had read were some buildings had not been renovated, so I requested one that had already been. We arrive in less than 2 weeks so I will let you know.

Awesome, let me know how the renovations look. Any chance you can take a few pics of the unit?

We're headed back there in 4.5 weeks ourselves, so I'm curious to find out what was renovated... the unit seemed pretty recently renovated when we last went in 2011, so I can hardly imagine what else would have needed fixing up.

We stayed in building 65. It is right beside the island pool and a short walk over the bridge to the main pool area. We thought the location was perfect! The boys (age 9 and 11) regularly made the walk down to the activity centre at the other end of the lake. They didn't think it was far at all. There is a water shuttle for those who prefer to travel by boat, but we found everything to be pretty close to our building.

Have a great trip! We loved Cypress Harbour.

One of the really nice things about building placement around the lake at this resort is that it isn't far from any of the buildings to at least one major resort feature. Like this poster, we like the placement of Building 65 (next to the Island Pool complex; three buildings away from the activity center; five buildings away from the small Bayside Pool; a short walk through the Island Pool area and across the bridge to the Clubhouse Pool area/Marketplace store/Pavilion Bar/Galley Grill/main clubhouse and the tennis courts and spa/gym building just beyond all that).

If the view from the lanai makes a difference, I'd suggest a lake view over a golf course view - golf course view buildings are also further away from the resort amenities. Buildings 50-65 (except for Building 57) are all lake view buildings, Building 57 and Buildings 66-74 all have golf course views. Resort map, not to scale, here.

In addition to the resort map, try using Google Earth to get a good idea of the layout of the resort. That should help as well.
