Man shot himself in leg by accident, Sheriff's Office says

BAY LAKE - A man preparing to go to the movies with his son at the Downtown Disney shopping complex shot himself in the leg Saturday night, authorities said.

The man, who was not named, was treated at Orlando Regional Medical Center for a non-life-threatening accidental injury, Orange County sheriff's spokesman Jim Solomons said. The man's 12-year-old son phoned authorities about 7:30 p.m. to report the shooting.

Solomons said the man had his son get out of their car so he "could safely clear his weapon," Solomons said.

He removed the semiautomatic handgun from his waistband and while he was removing the magazine or clearing the round from the chamber, "the firearm discharged, striking him in the leg." Solomons said it did not appear the gun was brought into Downtown Disney.

The man was in stable condition at ORMC late Saturday.

Interesting that the article got the Bay Lake tagline. While all 4 theme parks are in Bay Lake, Downtown Disney is actually in Lake Buena Vista.

Maybe it was just a mistake on their part when they wrote the story, however that's a good catch to notice something like that.

Thanks. I've always been fascinated with the story of how the cities of Lake Buena Vista, Florida and Bay Lake, Florida were created by the Florida legislature in order for Disney World to be built and Disney to be able to govern themselves via the Reedy Creek Improvement District. Wikipedia has a good article about the RCID.

Generally, everything west of Bonnet Creek is in the city of Bay Lake whereas the areas east of Bonnet Creek are in the city of Lake Buena Vista.

Because it wouldn't a complete thread without an added bit of dirt/rumors from Knox....

Word on the street in the "L-B-V" says this was a CM who worked at Disney. The whole situation is in review but odds are good ... he'll be dismissed for bringing a gun to Disney property.

This will be one to keep an eye on if true..

If you are right about that then this is something we should keep following to know what happens.

I saw this today and almost fell out of my chair laughing. I mean it must have hurt alot but seriously, where's the sense of security if your dad shoots himself? I know it wasn't on purpose, but wouldn't you have the brains to keep your gun consealed away somewhere that your son wouldn't be hurt with it?

So far, the gun lobby has had pretty much NO luck in having the right folks step forward to make their case in Central Florida.

Too bad Disney didn't own the rights to Yosemite Sam. Ha ha
