Man dies in Running of the Bulls in Pamplona

What a horrible way to go, but you have to wonder what these people are thinking. It's amazing that this doesn't happen more often.

Thrill seekers often suffer the disappointment of their expectations. Sorry for the family.

It's an amazing ritual. My husband wanted to run but we were in Pamplona one day too early and couldn't return. We were there for the opening ceremony and it's an exciting and joyful time.

While I have no interest in running, I can certainly understand if not approve of the challenge and those who find it exhilirating.

I don't understand why people do it, but to each his own. My idea of fun is sitting on the beach drinking a Marguarita, not running after bulls. I was very surprised though that only 15 people have been killed since they started keeping a record of deaths in the 20s.

I've never understood the appeal of that event and feel sorry for his family because they have lost a loved one who made a decision to do something really stupid.

Given the fact that only 15 people have died during this event in 84 years, I would say that this is one of the safest ways to thrill seek. Certainly better odds than I get driving my car 80+ miles a day during my commute.

I can see why people do it. It looks like fun. It is a challenge and is the same reason people skydive or swim in shark infested waters or climb Mount Everest. Basically, it is something to do that makes people feel alive. Sorry to hear that some people get hurt or worse, but that adds to the appeal of the event.

I dont see any difference between that and someone skydiving, bungee jumping, cliff diving, alligator wrestling, or any number of other things.

I don't know why people do those things either :confused3 but I guess it's the old "different strokes for different folks" thing.

I do feel sorry for the man's family.

A dear friend of Italian descent has a favorite saying: You mess with the bull, you get the horns.

Can't understand why people do this, nor do I understand people who skydive, free runners, gator wrestling etc. but it's still a sad time for the family.

Your right, all of those things are stupid. I went skydiving once. And although i loved it, I'm smart enough not to tempt fate again.

Some of the neighbors were standing around talking a few months ago and somehow, the running of the bulls came up. I made some remark about "those dumbasses who run from the bulls in Spain." Someone chimed in, "Idiots," while another said, "Morons," etc. Then we noticed one of the neighbors was not saying a word, but looked awfully sheepish. We started laughing and said, "You did it, didn't you?" :rotfl2:

Yes, he had. :lmao: He claimed it was not his idea, but a friend's and that he immediately saw the error in judgment as soon as the bulls took off. He said there's not really anyplace to go but FORWARD, so you run like hell. The side streets are all blocked off by spectators. He saved himself by leaping for a window and pulling himself up, out of the stampede. He's not someone you'd picture as doing something that risky, but he was younger and as is often the case.......he'd had more than a few drinks and it "seemed like a good idea at the time." :rotfl:

My nieghbor ran with the bulls a couple of years ago. He now has pics up in his office of when he was hit by a bull. It was his lucky day. Seemed pretty crazy to me.

The other thing to consider here is that most of the people who do these things tend to be younger. When you are younger, you can afford to be a little more reckless.

Also, I can understand why some people seek these thrills. After all, how much of a life are you really living if you don't have any scars as you go through it?

It may not be something you should do every weekend, but the risk of death in most of these events is still probably much less than saying dieing in a car accident or some more mundane way.

Do must of you not at least envy their courage in some small way? I know I do. In addition, I bet the people who survive these encounters probably all walk a little taller after these events. Perhaps these experiences in cheating death actually allow them to enjoy their life even more.
