Hi there!

A few braiding questions.....

1. Does anyone have any tips for making braids last longer?

2. How long does it normally take to have a full set of braids (shoulder blade length.)

3. Where and when do they offer braiding on the 3 day. (This is the one thing that my DD9 wants to do and I don't want her to miss out. I also don't want to miss out on the shore excursions we have planned.)

4. Any great tips on when, where to sign up?

5. Anything else I'm not thinking of?

Thanks in advance!

My 8 year old daughter had her hair braided when we went on the Wonder in March. Her hair hits the top of her shoulders and it took about 2 hours to do her whole head. It cost us $65. On the 4 day cruise they start braiding hair byappointment on the day you board until the evening before Castaway Cay. They braid hair at Castaway Cay with no appointments. Sign up as soon as possible when you board the ship.

Hi my dd and I wear braids a lot. We love them. Depending on the style braids can take two or more hours. Sometimes up to 8 hours. Getting braids on your vacation would take about 2 hours like the other post said.

To make the braids last longer I would recommend not washing them everyday unless your dd goes swimming or play in the sand. When you wash her braids in the shower make sure the water runs the way the braids are going. for example if her braids are going all back have her turn her back to the shower and lay her head back. Don't scrub the braids. After you wash her braids you can blow dry it or not. Put oil (grease) in between her scalp and tie it down with a silk scarf when she goes to bed. If her braids get really frizzy and she doesnt want to take them out ...use gel to slick them down. :)

I would also recommend you finding someone to braid her hair before the cruise. That is what I'm planning on doing for my dd. You can find someone to come to your house and braid her hair. This is better b/c you or your dd won't feel rushed and she can choose from a lot of styles. Feel free to ask any questions about braiding. I know all about braiding. Have a great day :)

Just as with my permed hair, I always use a silk pillow case when my daughters have their hair braided. It keeps it from getting frizzy and all.

Thanks everyone! I never would have thought of a silk pillow case, but it makes perfect sense! I'm not sure that I understand the purpose of the oil. Won't it make her hair greasy and thus make the need to wash more often? :confused3 Any advice is welcome!

I appreciate all of the answers! :cool1:

I'm sure that depends on your hair type.

whatever you do don't put conditioner on the braids. my dd's braids lasted over 3 weeks. we just dumped shampoo on them, rinsed them out and let them air dry :earsgirl:

Oil does not depend on the hair type. Synthetic braids gets very dry, brittle and tangled and putting a little oil is just to keep your hair and the synthetic hair soft, smooth, silky etc. The oil protects your hair from being damanged by the Synthetic braids. It also helps protect the hair when it's time to take them out. My dd has "soft" "good" "pretty", oily hair and from MY experience with and without the oil...the oil really protected her hair. I am not saying use the whole jar :) Just a little bit (a dab)

This is what professionals have told me and from my experience it helped. Have a great day!!! :cool1:

I agree with you, heck I do the same thing with or without braids. However, I willing to bet that 99% of the people here are not using synthetic hair when they have their children's hair done.

The ones that are most likely to use synthetic hair, will have the braids done before leaving home, not while on vacation.

Hi my friend went on the cruise and said the hair was synthetic. I'm not 100% sure if they use it or not. :) Synthetic hair does last longer tho. Even if it's 100 % human hair the same procedure applies in making the braids last longer. My dd uses the synthetic because the human hair slides out her hair and doesn't last at all. I went to the beauty supply last night and my dd saw orange braids in a hair magazine and ask can she put ONE orange braid in her hair :rotfl:

Forgive me for being ignorant, but would you explain the synthetic hair/braid thing to me :confused3 They don't use your own hair? Or is it kind of like extensions if you don't have enough hair?
thanks
Sherry

it can be used for short or long hair. My dd and myself has long hair but braiding our hair without adding hair (extentions) makes our braids unravel and become loose faster. For my dd I will add the extentions about 1 inch longer than her hair because she likes to wear beads on the ends and to keep the beads from sliding off some people use rubber bands, foil, thread etc and that could damage your ends. So if you add and inch or so longer the rubber bands would only be on the hair you purchased (synthetic or human) :)
Maybe I should take appointments and braid hair in my cabin :) Hey anything to help pay for the cruise :rotfl:
HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!

When and where are they offered on the 3 day? Does anyone know? If you get them done before the trip, how do you choose the person to do it? How do you know that they will last?

Sorry for so many questions, but this is the one thing my DD wants to do, so I want it to work for her. :earsgirl:

On our three day you made appointments the day of embarkation at 10 forward (If I remember correctly) However, they announced it over the speaker. There the girls that do the braiding were stationed and taking appointments for the next day. We made an appt for like 8:30 the next morning which was Nassau day. There were two different people and we didn't really choose between them it was all depending on who had the available appt time. I've never had her hair braided before but it appeared to be a good job and lasted quite awhile... about 4 weeks before some of them began falling out. Definitly lasted through our entire vacation and even a week or two after we got home. (she wanted all her friends at school to see them) This is one thing my DD also had wanted to do as well. I'm sure we'll be getting it done again next time! My DD got what I think is called the half crown where it was cornrowed just until about half her scalp forming something similar to a headband. Worked great on vacation for having an easy hairstyle and TONS of people came up to us repeatedly asking where we had it done at the parks. I was worried about it damaging her hair as I've read on this board before but it didn't seem to break it off much.

We had my daughters hair braided while in Nassua, it came out great, half crown for $30. Be careful about the type of suntan lotion you use between the braids, we used the clear type that has alcohol in it and the elastics started to break down almost all at once about five days after they were done, my daughter was so bummed. Live and learn. :)

Do it before you go if you can. The braiders on board do a good job but it is more expensive and they can get pretty booked up. We had a friend who just went to a Supercuts type place and had both of her girls show up at the cruise braided. I thought it was a great idea.

Unless the person doesn't know what they are doing, they will last a long time, your daughter will probably be sick of them first.

We did DD's hair the last day at sea on the boat (only time we could get an appointment!) and were very pleased with the gal who did the braids. She was gentle w/the little girls (told me all about her own 4 year old in Costa Rica) and was quick and efficient. After telling my 5 yo about how it would pull on her hair and maybe hurt, she ended up falling asleep in the braiding chair she was so at ease! She did the half crown for $18 and I tipped an additional $4 (so she can quickly buy that house in Costa Rica to live w/her little girl!) so was only $22 total. It has been little over a week now and still holding up fine!
