The portable perks (at least last year) included merchandise discounts and some dining discounts among others. With magic bands, I was kind of hoping we wouldn't need to whip out any cards, but I'm wondering if that is not the case. The fine print on portable perks indicates that we need ID and the DVC ID... is that still the case?

Yes because you could give your band to someone else.

Photo ID and proof of discount (DVC Member ID, Annual Pass or TiW Card) is required to get any applicable discount. The discount has to be manually applied by the CM on the POS. The POS only communicates with the resort system to allow room charging. The POS has no way to know what discount you may be entitle to.

Yes and yes.

Annoying. I wish they could (if we opted in) synch our IDs with our MDE account. Ah, well, those two little cards never killed me in the past, they won't this time.

Unlike some, I am totally down with MB's if it means I have to keep track of less!

It's rare, but the real world can drop into even WDW (such as a need for ambulance/urgent care). I wouldn't go farther than a 1/4 mile from my house without driver's license, insurance cards, and a major credit card -- and at WDW also any cards that might be relevant there. (My last trip I left my Disney VISA home by mistake, so missed out on the "free" Epcot photo opp). Used to be, it was handy to "lay all the cards" on the table to see which discount the restaurant//shop would honor (DVC, TIW, AP or PAP, said Disney Visa) since it varies and I can't remember what discount works where.
