Does anyone know why DCL doesn't use the magic band system? I LOVED it while in WDW 2 years ago, no more worrying about paying for stuff with cash or credit, room key, photo pass, ect. It was such an amazing convience to our trip I just don't get why it isn't on DCL?

Ports are not set up for this. DCL could get it in place but the ports wouldn't be.

What's the difference in convenience between a band and a card?

Pockets! As a female you don't always have them , a wristband I don't have to think about/keep track of. I mean I always make it work, but it would be nice not to have too :)

My wife always has a pocket, at least when she's out in public. It's under her shirt. She stores all sorts of stuff in there when her shorts/pants/skirts don't have pockets.

The idea of having to keep track of a colorful, uncomfortable wrist band, which marks me as a Disney cruiser while in port, doesn't appeal to me in the slightest. I'd take the thing off and put it in my pocket as soon as I got off the boat, so that defeats the purpose.

I thought this same thing at Aulani this summer, mostly bc the kids had magic bands for the kids' club and no ability to check themselves in or out. It seemed overly complicated to use a combination of parent room keys and kids magic bands to check in and out. Magic bands for all would streamline the process. I'm sure that it's all a matter of avoiding a big tech upgrade there and on the ships. But magic bands certainly are nice for pool and water slide usage! Not a fan of the lanyard floating around in the water or strangling me.

On the flip side, I've seen more than one female fussing about the "unsightly" tan lines the bands give them in the parks.

Can't win for losing it seems.

I don't think there is an effective way to let guests know of their muster station and all of the other info that is printed on the actual card. I think that would be really cost prohibitive to print that onto magic bands.

The card actually has important info on it such as your lifeboat station. So in an emergency you can look at it to know where to go. Couldn't do that with a band as easy.

We just sailed on RCL, and they do have RFID wristbands. They charged for them, which, ew, so I didn't get one, but I did notice a lot of people having a lot of problems with them. You still needed your card to disembark and reboard the ship, but you needed your license as well for that, so I assume you could just grab both when you went to grab one.

RCL also didn't have "lanyard culture" like DCL - seriously, *everybody* on DCL wears a lanyard, but I only saw a few on RCL. Which means people on DCL with lanyards look normal, and people on RCL with lanyards look like dorks :rotfl:

Lanyards.

A card scans easier on a card reader and a door than that band, and you just hold the card up instead of contorting my wrist.

Only on a few ships.

On all the other ships it's a card.

And on those ships almost everyone wears a lanyard. I got my blingy lanyard from Freedom of the Seas! And there were a ton of choices for that lanyard in the gift shop.

Feeling that royal doesn't have a lanyard culture is purely from the ship you were on. :)

True! We were on Anthem. A big difference on RCL - they have enough ships to have entirely different cultures on each one! :)

You also need some type of card to activate your cabin's lights. You can lock up all of your other card's in your cabin safe (since you won't need them onboard anyways) and use the slot to store your card while in your cabin. Makes it also easy to find when you leave the cabin.

I don't. I loathe the things. The only time I wear one is at a convention like Dragon Con because the badges are so big, and I take the thing off and wrap it around my belt several times, wearing it around my waist.

I much prefer a card in a thin wallet (I have a DCL wallet with a clear front). I don't have to take the card out to get in my room and the thing goes in my pocket when I'm not using it.
