Do you think Disney would ever go to a model of you getting a magic band with your package, the value of which could be applied to purchasing an upgraded or personalized one? It seems like a no-brainer to me...I'd love to have a custom magic band but can't justify spending $20 to replace something I already have that works fine and would go unused. Now if it were a case of spending $10 and having just one better one, I would be all over that.

What do you think? Maybe this already exists and I missed it...

First the complimentary ones are personalized.
You choose from a selection of colors and can have your name/nick name printed on the underside.

They already allow you to decline the complimentary one so if you purchased a themed one you wouldn't "have" to have 2 magic bands.
However I do not believe they will ever say yeah sure you can use the value of the complimentary one towards and upgrade to a themed one.
They already have everyone right where they want them. If you want a themed one bad enough you're paying that full price for it.
I've seen people that literally just collect themed ones as though they are Disney trading pins. They don't even take them out of the package. Instead they just put them on display.
Its the people that are more than willing to pay for theme when they don't need them that will prevent your scenario from happening.

Fair point. I didn't realize I could decline the complimentary one but I'm guessing it wouldn't give me a discount... They have me *almost* right where they want me. There's no saying I won't cave before we go and buy them anyway so I think you are right!

I get what you’re saying and agree you should be able to “upgrade” your MB if you want to. My husband (a once avowed Disney hater) has the tiki one that plays the tiki song when you tap but it stopped working on our last trip so he’s looking for a new one. He would get so excited every time he tapped and it actually worked and played the song, lol

I don't see them allowing you to put the "value" of the free MB toward an upgrade, but I am surprised, quite honestly, that they haven't incorporated the ability to purchase the limited edition and picture MB's when customizing the ones the come with a resort stay. I think they are missing a revenue opportunity.

While you ARE paying for it in the price of the room no there would be no discount because Disney claims "complimentary" lol.
I have a Figment one but its the old version and I haven't used it since the newer version of magic bands came out.
I doubt I'd buy a themed one at this point because as much as I do enjoy magic bands I also where a fitbit so I bought a magic band puck holder that slides onto your watch band so now I don't have to wear something on both wrists.
Instead when I want something cute and custom I go with a new phone case.
I have an adorable Figment one I got custom made at Disney springs.

Yes! You said it better than me. DH's birthday is a month before we go. I thought he was just getting KTTK tour passes for his b day but he might need us to also get themed magic bands.

I don't think Disney's value for the MB would be the retail price anyway. More like a few dollars.

I think its a great idea...offer the "complimentary" ones as they are, and add an option to upgrade to a fancier one for a fee. I actually can't believe it's not like that already.

No, I don't think they'll ever implement this. I think if they were going to, they would have done it years ago
