We made a res for Crystal Palace breakfast at 8:05 am (late march) for 4 people. Plans changed and now we will have 5 - Nothing is available until 9:10 for 5 people (yet) - problem is BBB is set for 9:30 and that can not be changed. CM suggested to just show up with the 5 and play dumb (not to hard to do!) - anyone have any past experience with "changing" the reservation like that? I keep checking a few times a day and will do, but so far no cancellations.

You can try that, but there are no guarantees you will get seated with your extra guest. Keep trying to change your ADR to an earlier time. If you can't then you can try and add an extra guest as a walkup. But you need to be prepared to hear "No". As you are going to be there first thing in the day, I think you have a good shot. But don't depend on it.

We showed up with two extra people for Cinderella's Royal Table lunch, which was - of course - totally sold out. It wasn't a problem.

I would think that adding a 5th would be easy - they could just throw a chair at the end of a 4 top. If it was two to three, it might be harder but I don't see why this would be a problem.

This is MUCH easier to do at ADR times which are right at restaurant opening time like your is. We did the same at 'Ohana with an opening time ADR with no problems. For CP I would think there would be even less chance of being turned away because you'll hav already entered the park early for your ADR and once you're in there, they won't want to turn you away from the restaurant. The only thing I don't know is if they check the list to see if you have the right number of people when you're going through that early ADR turnstile at the park entrance. Anybody know?

That being said, if you're on the dining plan then I think I'd consider booking an extra ADR during the trip just to be sure that if you are turned away, you'd still have a place to use the credits that were supposed to be used at CP. I don't see you being turned away but I think I'd have that backup just in case (I always have backup ADRs in case we miss one or two for any reason; yes I do end up going to them and paying OOP but I would cancel if I decided not to).

We have showed up to LC with an extra person and were accomodated, no prob. However, I would keep trying to modify the ressie and make showing up with an extra guest your last resort.

BTW, this was going from 4 people to 5.

The tables in some of the Disney World restaurants are so close together, it might not be easy to "throw a chair at the end."

Also, there's the fire code and allowable maximum capacity regulations to consider so there are reasons why it isn't always easy.

well just by luck I was able to get one for 8:15am for 5.. I kept checking and checking and last night it was there.. lol.. so I am going to cancel the 8:10 - so if anyone wants crystal palace on 3-28 at 8:10am for 4, pm me :)

We've done this a few times and it has never been a problem.
All this pandamonium and drama over reservations is highly overrated I think. They have been very kind and helpful.
We've done this at O'Hana, Le Cellier, etc. Never been turned away.
