I planned on going to Macy's with DD for DS's wedding and to have them do our makeup, and buy some of course.

Any suggestions for which make up counter to go to? Which one has the best make up and artists??

I am clueless!! Thanks :).

I would walk around and find a person that has on make-up that you like-whatever that is-and go to them. If you want a very light touch to just enhance your features, find someone with make up like that on. Go in a week or so before the wedding to try out different things and then if you like what you get, find out when that person is working and if she will be around for the day of the wedding.

MAC IMO has the best makeup artists BUT they tend to look rather ummm theatrical shall we say. :)
As far as I know MAC is also the best trained in the dept. store setting. As with any "makeover" be clear on what you don't want it to look like.

Check local day spas, a lot of them do a makeup refresher where they do a little makeover & recommend new colors for a fee. The fees I have seen are reasonable.

Ditto the MAC makeup. A friend of mine is a professional makeup artist for some of the TV shows, films & commercials here in NYC. I get to visit her on set sometimes, when security isn't so tight and they let me visit. There are usually 3-4 makeup artists on some of the bigger shoots, (like for Sex & the City,) and most of them use MAC make up.

The foundation is heavily pigmented, so you don't have to apply a thick layer and look "made up." MAC has a professional line, and an every day line. MAC has a mineral powder line, but they do NOT recommend it, nor is it used on film sets. It just does not give the necessary coverage. LIQUID foundation is better.

Here is a link for a MAC makeup thread here. :thumbsup2

A couple other makeup artists use Chanel.

Also, the number ONE trick: is to make sure you finish off your foundation (any brand,) with a very fine transparent powder, applied & blended in with a great soft blending brush. The transparent powder really sets the foundation so it looks like the texture of skin, rather than makeup sitting on top of the skin. And it gives a flawless finish. My MAC blending brush costs me $30 and it is worth every penny. :thumbsup2

If you like a natural look try Bobbi Brown or Laura Mercier. Both of these are makeup artist lines that have a focus on enhancing your features but keeping things very natural. If you'd like to try something a little more dramatic, try Chanel or Dior. Both of these lines have beautiful products that are lovely to work with. If you want to try something quite dramatic try someone like MAC or Yves Saint Laurent. These lines are both very saturated and work well for dramatic looks.

All that said, don't be afraid to mix and match products you like from many different brands. I adore Laura Mercier's tinted moisturizer, Chanel makes the most heavenly blushes and lipsticks, depending on what I'm after I love eyeshadow from Dior or MAC. MAC is also hands down the best lip gloss out there. If you're after a good concealer, The Balm makes some pretty fantastic ones as does Lancome. It's only makeup, and it washes off, so have fun!

THEY look theatrical but they will do your make-up however you'd like. They also have plenty of remover and tissue in case you don't like something.

I had the nice young lady there teach me a better way to wear my eyeliner as I was looking dated. She did it exactly right for me, not for her!

You may want want to find out the specific policies in advance, especially for Macys. Several years ago, the MAC counter in my Macy's required a minimum purchase of $50 for a make-up application - but only on Fridays and Saturdays. I do not know if this is the current policy, or if this was on a store-by-store basis.

Ask around and see who people in your area like. Usually you can get some opinions bc a lot of people get their make up done for Homecomings/Proms and weddings, so quite a few people will know who they like to go (you'll also probably find out which beauty Advisors to steer clear of, too LOL). You can't really say which brand has the best artists because it's different at every store.

Check out a few counters and talk to some of the Beauty Advisors, so you can see who's knowledgable and see what colors or ideas they'd have for your make up. Then you'd get a better feel for who you'll feel comfortable with.

Personally, I've always been a Lauder girl :)

MAC :worship: I LOVE MAC!!! The artist does wear some crazy make-up but that doesn't mean that they can't do your make-up the way you like it!! Just go in a head of time and talk to someone about what you want and want you don't want at all thats very important!! Good luck!! :flower3:

Thanks guys, I appreciate all the advice! I like NEVER wear makeup. If I do it's some lipstick and mascara. I usually wear make up for affairs...weddings, bar mitzvahs, etc... That is why I am asking the question. I want to look really good, but natural (enhance my beauty shall we say), for my sons wedding :).

If you want to look natural, MAC is definitely not the way to go. Plus, I know mine requires that you buy at least 4 products if you want a full make-up job.
I would recommend Clinique, personally. I find their make-up very high quality, plus you can call/visit them ahead of time and book an appointment time, which is important if you have a wedding to get to! You are not required to buy any products and cannot tip, which I always feel a bit bad about. I've had my make up done by them a couple of times and bought at least one thing every time, except for when I was headed to an event and was in a HUGE hurry.
Clarins is also big on the "natural" look-- you can also book appointments with them.

THIS doesn't look natural? :confused3

Or this one, that is most likely not retouched and airbrushed as they left the wrinkles and spots on SJP's chest.

People can choose to be as natural or as dramatic as they want with MAC makeup. It has to do with choosing the right colors & doing the right application.

In fact if people go to makeupalley.com and read the reviews, when someone is describing their complexion & coloring, they will often say something like, "My coloring is NW-30." That NW-30 is their MAC foundation or powder color. It is standard practice on that forum as so many people use MAC cosmetics. If you know your MAC color, you can find people with similar coloring and will know if the product may be a match for you.) Even when people compare the Bare minerals or other mineral makeup colors, they talk about their MAC color to match the various mineral colors.

I agree with this! :)

I've been thinking about a makeup makeover. Let us know what you went with and how it works out.

We have a Macys here that has a MAC annex. I call it an annex because it's a whole separate mini store attached to Macys. I've been wanting to check it out but I know MAC is expensive and I don't want to possibly get sucked into buying things I may not need or wear on a regular basis.

Even after a makeover, you can only get the products you are interested in. My advice is get the foundation, concealer and transparent powder. It's microfine and doesn't look powdery on. It is important to have someone match you with your correct coloring. If your foundation color is off, everything else on top of that will be too. I was always paranoid I'd be one of those women who is wearing very obviously the WRONG color foundation and you can see a very definite demarcation line at the neck.

My makeup artist friend matched a foundation & concealer to the exact shade of my skin. If I wanted, I could just dot it over a pimple, without doing my whole face - that is how close of a skin match my foundation & concealer color are. Do you know how many different drugstore brand bottles I'd have to buy & toss before finding the right color on my own? :headache:

Sometimes, being cheap is actually more expensive. Use the makeup people for their expertise. (But, of course, don't get talked into colors or a style you don't want.)

My blush is still a color from a previous makeover at Origins, not MAC. I didn't feel the need to switch brands just because I got a makeover. I still like the color and it was a similar enough shade to the MAC.

My eyeliner is cheapo Revlon Colorstay, from the drugstore. Not giving that up for the world as that stays on forever. :thumbsup2

My lipstick is currently 2 cheapie E.L.F. lipcolors I got from the dollar store. I mix them both together and get a great color. I even stocked up on extra tubes. So cheap! :woohoo:

I am, by no means a makeup maven. I prefer a really natural look. Most times, I don't wear foundation or powder at all. Just a swipe of blush, eyeliner & lipcolor. But, when I do want a nice, flawless look, it's nice having the best foundation, that I know matches and doesn't make me look made up. People would say, "I clean up well." :lmao:
