I keep seeing this item from Designs in Machine Embroidery, but I'm having trouble justifying the cost. Curious if anyone here has one.

http://www.magnahoop.com/

The cost is $129.99 plus shipping.

I dont have that - but do you have a problem with hooping? If you dont - then i cant see how useful that would be. I wouldnt mind a BIGGER hoop but this one just looks like it holds the fabric differently. what kind of machine do you have - i have a viking designer 1

I have two, the Brother SE270D (the disney machine) with a 4x4 hoop. I also have a new Babylock Ellure with a 4x4 and a 5x7. I was thinking this might do good for small things like grosgrain ribbon (hair ribbons and headbands) and things like cuffs. I absolutely hate hooping, cause I'm picky and like it really tight and smooth. I'm in my early 40s and if I do it a lot (like doing a bunch of towels) my hands start to ache. I've also had a few episodes with the 5x7 where it has popped loose midway through the project, ruining everything. I'm also looking at the stitch eraser, someone recommended it to me, have you heard of it?

I have heard mixed reviews on the stich eraser. My thing is - if something comes out horrible and its too many stiches to take out, i throw it away - or use as rags. If it is something that just can not be throw out some people sware by electic razor/mastach trimmer. havent tired it - but might be less expensive then the stich eraser.
I have a viking designer I and LOVE IT!!

I'm the same way, if it turns out funky, like when the bobbin thread comes through, I pitch it. THe woman who recommended the SE to me was doing the embroidery thing professionally now, said it saved her a ton of $$. I may try the nose hair thingy first! :thumbsup2

My friend got the Disney Brother for christmas and the bobbin thread comes up through sometimes and then also the mickeys head it doesnt stitch all the way to the outside of the ear or the outline doesn't get close enough to the ear stitching most of the time. She fills it in with marker. Any help for her?

I don't have the Disney machine, but here's what I do about the problems...

for the bobbin thread problem, you have to lower the tension. On my machine, for regular embroidery thread, I lower the tension to 1.8, for metallic thread I lower the tension to 0.

The mickey head issue has to do with the type of material. I have to tweak my digitized designs based on the fabric I am embroidering on. Sometimes circles have to be digitized as ovals. If not, then make sure you are stitching on a securely hooped, non stretchy fabric...

hth!

p.s. in regards to the OP about magna hoop...hmm...interesting...I often don't hoop at all but use sulky sticky to stick the fabric down...it's not the greatest b/c the fabric tends to travel...

I have sticky stuff but am too afraid to use it:rotfl: . I just can't justify the cost of the magna hoop either, so I'll wait till I see someone else use it successfully!
