LUGGAGE NiGHTMARE - OIL SPILL

I always worry about something like that happening. What would you do stuck on a ship without your clothes??

That's scary, but not nearly as frightening as the story listed on 2/14 of the sexual abuse of a minor by a supervisor of a children's activity area on the Queen Elizabeth 2!! :sad2:

That's officially worse that the incident I'd heard of where one of those trolleys went off the pier into the ocean, and soaked all the luggage in salt water. I wish I could remember where I'd read that one.

So very, very sad for those people!

Wouldnt have bothered me much. I would have has them hose off our bags, that would be all we would need.

I planned for this type of thing happening. I watch peoples soft sided luggage getting soaking wet in the rain at the airport, but ours stays dry on the inside!

Looking at the pictures, this was not a bit of oil that got sprayed; rather more of a drenching. Unless you have a rubber/silicone gasket around the lip, a hard side would still allow oil in. Granted it would not be nearly as much as a soft sided suitcase, but you still would get some pentration through the seams, screw holes where the wheels and hinges are attached, down the telescoping handle (which will have screws or rivets attaching the tubes inside your hard shell). Very few pieces of luggage are marketed as waterproof.

This luggage does have a gasket that seals everything out when closed. Something I looked for when we bought it. We have used these for years, and so far so good.

To be fair, it's no worse that flying into an airport very late the night before, or even on the day of your cruise and the airline loosing your baggage, and that happen's all the time!
At least it sound's like some of those Guest's got some of their clothing back though, but it is a really horrible way to start your vacation.

I hope Carnival gave them load's of onboard credit to spend on merchandise and new clothing, and arranged for them to debark the ship again to buy some new clothes and formal wear at Carnival's expense.
Hopefully the Ship's laundry could wash or dry clean what ever they managed to salvage for their trip.

Accident's happen, but it's never nice when they do, and I hope Carnival are doing all they can to make it better for those Guests.

Maybe it was me...I once posted about that. We were at PC and saw one of the cages be accidentally pushed in the water by a forklift. Don't know the outcome but I was unbelievable.

Good eye when shopping then. It is a bit hard to tell in the pic, but the logo on yours looks like American Tourister, correct?
I had a Samsonite hard side many years ago but it didn't have a gaket. It also really got roughed up on a flight to Australia. I suspect a portly luggage handler may have sat on it, or it was dropped from the cargo bay to the tarmac as after I opened it, the two sides were difficult to mate together (would not line up properly), and one of the latches was broken just enough that it wasn't fully engaging.

Been there! For our 1st 2 cruises our luggage was delayed. The 1st time we flew in same day. While other passengers were content with the airlines promises to deliver to the ship, I wasn't & waited at TPA for our luggage to come on the next flight. Good thing because my parents met others on the cruise that still hadn't gottent their bags.

The 2nd time, we flew in the morning prior to sailing. My parents luggage was delayed all day and they finally got it the next morning. Boy were they stressed out. Part of the stress was due to them getting voice mail at USAirways' customer svc help line. When they tried to leave a message, it said the mailbox was full. :furious: This was back in Feb 06 at the height of their history of bad service.

Yes, they are American Tourister.

This model isnt for sale anymore, um sure they have a new model. Another nice feature is the built in TSA locks, and a mounting point on the inside you can secure something to (I use that when we travel with a handgun)

That would be pretty horrible for me, because I wear big sizes, 3X or 4X depending on the shirt, not typically carried in most gift shops.

I guess whatever I wore to get on the ship would be what I wore the entire week! SHORTS AT DINNER! :scared1::scared1::scared1::scared1::scared1::scared1::scared1::scared1::scared1::scared1::scared1:

Having no luggage and just the clothes on your back is the ultimate reason if questioned or asked! :rotfl:

To help prevent your clothes getting ruined...if not by the very rare oil spill, then by the much more common "bags left out in the rain"....and you can't afford the hard-sided luggage, I like the idea of the plastic bags, but also, you could spray the outside of your bags with "Camp Spray"....water repellant spray that's used on tents to have them not absorb water.

If you use the spray, though, do it well in advance of your trip and make sure you have some place to leave the bags to air out, since most of the sprays smell.
