Luggage into Rental Car / SUV.... Help me choose!

We had an Altima for our last rental and got 2 large suitcases (one is immense actually) and a big duffle bag along with 2 carry on bags in the truck with no issue. And that is one of the smaller trunks in the full size row, as per the pp's specs.

My vote is for the fullsize. I just don't see that you're going to get that much more value/space for the additional dollars to go to the SUV.

This reminds me of an uncle who purchased a very small Mercedes sports car in Germany (yeah, life is hard.) He planned to cram four people and luggage into it and drive it around europe before freighting the car home. A friend in their hometown had the same model car so they had a "dress rehearsal" using the friend's car -- loaded all the luggage and the people into the car to make sure it fit.
