We are planning on using the luggage delivery service to get our bags to the Wilderness Lodge while we head over to EPCOT. Our plane is scheduled to arrive at MCO at 8:33 am. According to the Disney site, "Your luggage will travel separately, and it may take up to 3 hours after you arrive at your Disney Resort hotel for your luggage to be delivered to your room. Please pack any valuables, medications or anything you need immediately upon your arrival in Orlando in a carry-on bag—and have your MagicBand with you and easily accessible at the airport and when you arrive at your Disney Resort hotel. You do not need to be in your room to receive your luggage."

How reliable is the luggage delivery service? I am better off waiting for my luggage?

It is pretty reliable, but there is always a chance something could happen with luggage. There are just a lot of points of potential failure (multiple airports, possibly multiple planes, MDE, the resort). I would not want to sit around waiting for luggage though - that would be frustrating. Chances are you room won't be ready until later anyway, so waiting wouldn't be very practical. I would go to Epcot and wait until my room was ready. Then, take an afternoon break to see the room and check on the luggage.

Don't wait for your luggage. Odds are it will arrive just fine. Pack what you need for the first day in your carry-on (which you should always do anyway) and go on with your day.

There are very few reports of issues using DME to move your checked bags. But, as it says, pack valuables and anything you may need for that first 24 hrs of your stay in a carry on bag. Airlines can misdirect bags....if your bags go to Detroit, when you're in Orlando, you'll want to be able to change your clothes and freshen up. I always travel with a change of clothes, a swimsuit (in hot months), small sized toiletries and sleepwear for that first night. The only time I have actually needed those things was the one time I needed it....going home!!! So even when flying home (flights can be diverted and delayed) I have that carry on bag packed properly!!! Live and learn.
