Hello :goodvibes

Seeing as dh and the rest of the crew are driving this year, we thought it might be a good idea to get some type of carrier for our roof racks on our van. We have a Sienna. I have searched on the net and found mostly soft sided ones. Pretty much everything I have searched is American as well!

Can anyone tell me where I look for one of these carriers? I searched Canadian Tire and they only have the skinny ones. SEars had nothing that I could find. Where do I look? What price am I looking at? Do you know if anyone rents these kinds of carriers?

Guess I should have started looking sooner than four weeks before they go!!!! ;)

Thanks for any help!

We have had a soft sided one for years and couldn't be without it. They are very inexpensive, where as the hard ones are a anywhere from a few hundred to nearly a thousand. Canadian tire has the soft ones for around $60. Plus, the soft ones are easy to store when you are not using it and the drag is a little bit less because you can strap it down tight.

If you where thinking about a hard one so that you can leave things inside it, I would say forget it. They are VERY easily opened.

I beg to differ. A premium case will have a sliding rod fastener that is impossible to jimmy open without a key.

Perhaps ones with latches that are hooks may be pried with some force but remember these are made to withstand huge wind forces and are built durably so.

Hard cargo boxes are more weatherproof than a nylon soft case. A lengthy stretch in driving rain will be a real test.

We have a Thule "surf board" (the kids call it) and have had no complaints. It has made many trips to Florida and it amazes me how much we can jam into it.

We have driven 5 straight hours in heavy rain with not a drop inside the bag. They made of a treated nylon type material that has a rubbery lining. Plus, you are not restricted to a a rigid box shape. You can more easily fit your cargo inside with no wasted space.

Thank you ... we have now begun our search. DH is not sold on the soft sided one. After all of this searching I had a friend send me an email to tell me they have one we can borrow!!! So yeehaw ... I may not have to buy one after all! We'll have to see!

Thanks for all the info ... we are trying to make our decision now!
