Okay- weird question to ask here, but I trust the opinions of strangers on this board more than other boards and lists I'm on. Has anyone flown either or both Lufthansa and Brit Air? Any opinions on service, food, the condition of the planes (I saw they use Airbus and we've only flown on Boeing built planes)?

Thanks in advance for any opinions. We're going to be flying to Central Asia sometime in the next 6 weeks (hopefully) and these are our two choices.

I knew this was you before even checking ;)

Although I have never flown either, my inlaws have quite often and prefer Lufthansa. I think that's who we will be taking when the times comes. I will be following this thread very closely

I've never flown Lufthansa, so cannot comment on them, but have frequently flown with British Airways, including to Asia. The aircraft are well maintained, and most long-haul aircraft have seat-back TV's now, I believe. Food is decent, depending on where you depart from (the worst Indian food I've had was flying back from Mumbai), and I've always found the cabin crew to be pleasant and helpful. As a nervous (yet frequent) flyer I like a cabin crew to look like they could cope in an emergency! Also, free drinks.

BA is my favourite airline (Virgin comes a close second, but mainly because they gave me an up-grade and I got to sit behind Billy Connolly! :thumbsup2 ).

British Air wins

Air France just surrenders

Thanks for the tips so far. I like free drinks and competent air crew, along with back of seat entertainment system. On our trip to China we had the screens, but the drinks weren't free (16+ hours on packed planes).

Kim- whatever would've tipped you off that it was me? :rotfl2:

Keep the opinions coming. In the end, though, I think it'll be whoever gives us the best deal (better known as the cheapest changable, short notice fare).

;) it's the anal overplanner in me. I knew they were my only 2 options from the beginning of our journey :teeth:. Did you check with Golden Rule Travel? I have heard (through the Kaz groups) that they are the best at getting great adoption fares with minimal if any change fees :goodvibes

ETA: Also check on the Yahoo Groups (if you haven't already)... I think this topic was on there a couple times as well

We flew BA on our last trip to France. They're great, but extremely anal about luggage weights. :scared: Our plane was a 747, great crew, now if I could have chucked the german woman, who slept and her kid, who ran through the entire flight I would have.

and both are usually great. Haven't had a bad experience on either one, although I did have a so-so experience on Lufthansa (turns out it was a USAir codeshare flight, though, so that could have had something to do with it). Bottom line, I don't think you will find fault with either one. As a frequent flier, my jet-lag advice is to constantly drink water in-flight, even when you're not thirsty. Yes, you will have to go to the restroom more often, but you should be getting up and at least stretching once an hour or so anyway.

Good Luck!

How "central" do you want to get? DS14's band is going to China the first week in April and their package is pretty reasonable $2400 all-inclusive. I think they have a few spots left on the parent trip (which I was supposed to take but since we didn't sell our old house I am not taking:sad1: .

She's traveling to Kazakhstan to adopt her son :goodvibes :woohoo:

Aircraft wise, Boeing planes are no better than Airbus. Both makers manufacture fine, safe aircraft. Both BA and Lufthansa have fairly new fleets and both have excellent maintainance. From a safety and aircraft point of view, both are fine.

My mom has flown both many times. She will pay a few hundred dollars more just to be on Lufthansa. She LOVES flying them.

Wow, I knew I could count on disboard people. Thanks.

If I could fly in somewhere really cheap and train in- I would. I'm one of those nutjobs who loves trains.

I think we'll end up on Lufthansa because they fly right out of our city to Frankfurt (though sometimes its a US Air codeshare).

Thanks for the info on Airbus v Boeing! I read recently about problems with electronics in the new airbus models causing a few companies to cancel contracts, so I was wondering about the older models.
