O.K. I know that there are many of us out there that are eating the low-carb way. I also know that when we go on vacation, we want to eat and have a good time without totally blowing it. Here is my question, aside from the buffets, where do you eat low carb while at Disney?

I thought this might be helpful for so many of us that go throughout the year, plus there may be a first timer here, who would like to know!

Sheree,

You must have read my mind! I'll be at Disney in less than 8 weeks (woohoo!!!) and I have some concerns about being able to stay on plan and working exercise into my routine before hitting the parks.

I do plan on eating buffets in the morning but will probably do counter service for dinner in the evening. I would also like to hear from those that have done lc at Disney. Thanks!!!

One thing that we try to do is eat at a counter service that has hamburgers and a toppings bar. DH will order the double cheeseburger and we'll get an extra bowl (or whatever you call the thing they put it in), then he gives me one of the patties and I load up at the toppings bar with mustard, lettuce, tomatoe, etc. Then he gets to eat the hamburger with bun and fries. Also saves a little money to.

This is SO much easier than you might think.

All of the sit down restaurants are easy. Order a piece of chicken, fish, or beef and a veggie. If they have potatos for the side dish ask to sub something.

Even the counter service is better. You can get a salad and soup almost anywhere. You can get carrots instead of french fries (and the GI of raw carrots is a lot lower than was first estimated). At EPCOT in The Land they have lots of healthy counter service places. I got a very tasty wrap that was FULL of veggies. Yum!

What we did last time was really load up at Boma for breakfast. Omelet, fruit, quinoa and 1/2 bran muffin. Had a snack in the room around 2pm of cheese and whole grain crackers (from grocery store). And had a dinner at a nice sit down most nights. (I had fish every night cuz I so rarely get it at home!). I think we spent about $80/day on food for 2 adults and 1 infant. (Including adult beverages)

I think we really needed the extra good carbs we had cuz we were walking close to 20000 paces per day. :) Enjoy your trip and eat healthy, but do allow yourself a few extras (for me it was the 1/2 bran muffin... I love those things!) you are on vacation after all!

When I went to WDW in September I was surprised at how easy it was to stay low carb. I had salads, but that gets a bit boring after while, but found that I was very good about taking my burger off the bun, and not eating fries.
Sit down meals were easy as well, I just had meat and veggies or ordered a salad with my meal.
I did cheat, I had a few Mickey ice cream bars and a muffin from the Main Street bakery one day, and had the tea at the GF.
When I got home and weighed myself I had not gained any weight. I really think that is because you walk so much, and I did my cheating "wisely". I allowed myself one treat each day, this way I did not feel deprived, but was able to maintain my weight.

helenk- that sounds about like what i wanted to do on vacation. I have a weakness for those huge rice krispy treats from the Main street Bakery. Although I've been low-carb for so long, I've come to find that some things with real sugar in it don't taste as well as it used to :(

I have to say that lately, alot of the things are really too sweet for me any more. Which is good because it keeps me on track. My son brought home some krispy creme doughnuts the other day and I use to love them, but this time I was only able to eat half and then threw the other half away.
My son and I both are doing the South Beach diet so we have already agreed that if we want something sweet while in WDW this year we will share a muffin or dessert, but I am not sharing a Mickey ice cream bar, I am sure that they still taste great!
