Have you heard this song by Eminem and Rihanna? It’s about physical abuse and it is so disturbing. I like the music, but it shakes me up every time I hear it. In the chorus Rihanna says (in part), “that’s alright because I like the way it hurts … that’s alright because I love the way you lie.” Any thoughts on what that means?

It's definitely a way for the artists to make listeners think about domestic violence. It's a very powerful song.

I took it as sometimes you get stuck in an abusive relationship, You like the way it hurts because you are getting some kind of attention from them and you can't help but believe the lies because you love the person you are with.

It is very sad and very disturbing.

Rihanna did an interview about the song, and I liked what she said about it...

It's something that we have both experienced from different ends of the table, and it was authentic, it was real, it was believable for us to do a record like that. It was something that needed to be done. And the way he did it was so clever -- he basically just broke down the cycle of domestic violence and it's something that a lot of people don't have a lot of insight on, so this song is really a powerful song and touches a lot of people.

Isn't she the one that was beat up by her own boyfriend?

I haven't heard the song and only commenting based on the posts here...but unlike a peice of literature that can be analyzed and critiqued--a song such as this is only going to inspire victims to continue being victims.

On an unrelated note of another problem...Reba's song "Fancy"...while it told the story of a woman whose current good life was the result of
being turned to prostitution by her own mother....it was obvious from the song and music video that prostitution was not being conveyed as okay.

Without reading and listening to the song lyrics, I
can only hope that it is obvious that an abusive relationship is not okay.
(Even more so if Rihanna was a victim herself. Very disturbing!)

The lyrics in this song are very powerful. My DH heard the song on the radio and he said that it is one emotion that only Eminem can take you through with words. It definately doesnt glorify domestic abuse. It kind of explains the emotions both good and bad. You should definately read the lyrics on lyrics.com while listening to the song to grasp the full meaning.

It is very powerful.
It definitely does NOT glorify domestic violence. I think it just gives very raw, very powerful insight into the mindset of BOTH parties in a case of domestic abuse.
It caught me way off guard the first time I heard it, and I almost had to turn it off. But I'm glad I didn't. Very good song!

I have a lot of respect for both Eminem and Rhianna for their talent and for the things they've overcome in their personal lives.

I think the song is a pretty authentic expression of an abusive relationship.

I feel Eminem's new stuff is very genuine, "I'm not afraid" is equally powerful.

Sounds to me like a great deal of his stuff was written while he was undergoing therapy, it's not refined but, then again, sometimes reality has very little to do with refinement.
