Hello,
We will be going to Universal for the first time in August. We are stay at DW, but will be doing 2 days at Universal. Because we are not staying onsite, we will be at the park all day. THe August heat worries me with my youngest son with medical problems, so here are my questions:
What indoor air conditioned rides/activities would you recommend for the afternoon?
Is there a day of the week that is better for the parks?
Are you able to get a guest assitance pass at Universal like at disney that allows the stroller to be used as a wheelchair in lines (he can't walk far distances)?

Guest Services will be able to provide both the Guest Assistance Pass as well as a wheelchair pass for the stroller.

In Universal Studios, there's a lot of rides that are indoors (although occasionally the queue will go outside, but you may bypass this with the Guest Assistance Pass. These rides include: Despicable Me (I'm guessing it'll be open by August), The Mummy, Twister, Disaster!, Men in Black, Simpson's Ride, ET, Terminator 2D. The only completely indoor shows are the Horror Make-Up Show and I believe the Barney show (someone correct me if I'm wrong!), but Beetlejuice's Graveyard Revue and Fear Factor Live have overhead coverage so you aren't in the sun.

At Islands of Adventure your choices for indoor attractions is much more limited. Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, Ollivander's Wand Show, Poseidon's Fury, Spiderman, Cat in the Hat, and the Discovery Center are indoors. The water rides may be outdoors, but they'll definitely cool you down! These include Popeye and Bluto's Bilge Rat Barges, Dudley Do-Right's Rip Saw Falls, and Jurassic Park River Adventure.

My daughter and I went the end of August and while it was very hot we did pretty good. We stayed well hydrated and popped into shops or sat down for a quick drink at one of the many restaurants and cafe's.

I agree with the previous poster on the water rides. You will get WET!

We took our time, got there early, ate in air conditioned places and had a terrific time!

Enjoy!

Thank you for the replies! I should mention the son I am worried about is 5 and we are hoping he will be 40" with shoes by the time we go in August. He is too short for the water rides. I was thinking of doing IOA in the morning and evening and Universal in the afternoon. Looking at the maps it seems that more of the indoor attractions are a universal. What do you think?

Yeah, I'd agree with that.
