Lookout Cay and texting thru the cruise app working?

I was wonder how well the texting works contacting family back on the ship through the Disney Cruise app if your on the island and family is back on the ship? I have only heard one account saying it isn’t working good.

Teenage son may want to stay on the ship while we enjoy the island and want to be able to stay in contact with him if needed.

I haven’t used the app, but the internet works well so I assume texting through the app would be ok
