great article but my question is what is "real food" chicken, beef, veggies all real food but 99% of it has been genetically altered at some point. So really, how the heck do I know what to really buy???
It's tough. Near here, There are many farms still remaining, and, especially the Amish ones, raise organic. We have an organic butcher with grass fed animals, no hormone chickens, and organic (abeit pasturized) milk, and eggs. Several of the local markets have grass fed, hormone free meat sections.
I think buying local, eating more fruits and veggies, and less prepackaged, fast food, high flour/sugar/sodium snacks is a huge start. Wild caught fish over farm raised.
I always say 'baby steps'. Oprah says "lean into it". Same thing - start small and make mindful choices.
Lisa and I were talking about an Aspergers/Autism diet the other day. I know most people do a casin/gluten free diet but how do I know it will do any good. I do think all the processed crap we eat is bad for us, but how do I make smart choices that won't either break the bank or take 8000 days to find and 5000 different stores. I've been thinking about doing more from scratch cooking, like pies and breads but I just need to find the time (And get a bigger kitchen LOL)
Again, I advocate baby steps. Try it. If someone consumes A LOT of something - that could be your trigger food. We tend to crave that which we shouldn't have. Gradually adding more fresh veggies and gradually reducing the fast food and packaged stuff is an inexpensive trial. Maybe it won't be dramatic, but what will it hurt?
My personal experience - I did not go totally Casin/gluten free. (I have a.d.d and dh is somewhere on the spectrum)
About 10 years ago we did stop drinking milk (DH used to drink gallons) and he was always angry. (Nickname grumpy and proud of it) We went on a ski trip to VT, where he was milkless for about 10 days, and Oh, how much I liked this guy! Why can't you ALWAYS be like this? We got home, back on the milk and two days later - the grouch was back. Even HE noticed it. When we back calculated to see what he hadn't had, it was milk. He stopped drinking all but the very occasional glass (like 4 ounces once every couple months) that day and grumpy doesn't live here any more.
Since We've been on this carb restricted diet, eliminating virtually all baked goods, white flour products and restricting even whole wheat, corn, oats, etc. I can tell you I have not been mentally "fogged in" in months. I can now go to a crop and chat and still accomplish something - before it was so distracting I never got anything done. His IBS isn't troubling him. So, that's one couple's experience. YMmv.
I took the food IQ test on the Oprah site, I only got #1 wrong.
And I do buy free range eggs from a nation wide brand, which are shipped to the grocer from the farm here in Blink. And my milk comes from a farm 2 towns over that uses no hormones.
Bet you will find beef, chickens and other meat too, if you keep your eyes open.
