Looking for Reviews of San Angel Inn and Cantina de San Angel

All we've really done in Mexico despite numerous trips is El Rio de Tiempo. We have considered going to the restaurants but end up heading to old Epcot and Epcot Resort Area favorites. Any reviews?

Before I start, I just want to make clear that no one review defines a resturant, and that any time resturants are reviewed, you'll always get a mixed bag of opinions.

Having said that, I would rather go hungry than eat at San Angel again. My GF and I made reservations there, for the last night of our trip in Jan, and it was miserable. We arrived 15 min early for our reservation and ended up waiting a little over an hour for a seat. Once seated, we were seated in a cramped corner by the kitchen entrance. Our server was not all together attentive, and very scarce. We only saw her when it came to drop off plates of food, so a refill wasnt even an option. And the food was not at all impressive.

However, on the positive side, the atmosphere is really neat, but certainly not neat enough to warrent eating there, in my opinion.

We've been to the TS and CS.TS is by far better than the CS.We are going back to the San Angel Inn in Sept.The food was really good and the atmosphere is great with the boat going by and the candle light.We even had a 2 yr. old and it was still nice.We also ate at the cantina our last trip too and it wasnt my favorite but my DH and our friends liked it.Everyone has a different taste so you have to see for yourself but thats what I thought.

Service is spotty. Last year we went for our anniversary (told them at check-in, btw, but nothing was done--not even a "Happy Anniversary"--and I know, I know--don't expect anything to be done anywhere) and had a hard time getting our server for refills. Also had our vegetarian daughter with us who received a chicken burrito by mistake--took a while to get that straightened out. We were on the dining plan and they refused to give our son an appetizer because he was ordering off the kids menu.
It used to be one of our favorites--had to go at least once every trip--but we're not planning to eat there this summer.

We like Cantina. Always get the combo. Last year tried the chicken salad. It's good. Only problem I have is when the birds start bothering you for food.

We eat there 2 weeks ago, and LOVED IT!! We had to wait for out table but it was maybe a 10/15 minute wait, we were definately glad to have an ADR as they were turning people away left and right. The food and Atmosphere were awesome. It was our favorite meal of the whole trip, a must do next trip for us. My only complaints were that the tables were too close together and that after being seated it seem to take forever the waiter to come over
( But he made up for it, he was very attentive after that.)

Oh and we didn`t really enjoy they desserts, I think they need a better dessert selection.

We ate there in March, it was wonderful! I had the Plato Mexicano, and a frozen margarita........and I've been looking forward to going back ever since! Our service was good, we had a great table right next to the river, and we all enjoyed our lunch very much. I had read plenty of poor reviews prior to our trip, but I'm very glad we decided to give it a try.

DisneyDotty, It's too bad they didn't do anything at your anniversary. We usually get a cake delivered for our special events and it becomes a great evening.

The Cantina is counter service, good but with the food kind of run together but okay for counter service. I have been to San Angel twice and really really like it. I enjoy the atmosphere, we have had good but not great service, and the food both times was very good. I will definitely go to San Angel again but will likely pass up cantina and go to the Margarita stand instead.

We really liked the Cantina. We thought the portions were ample and the food tasted good.

DH and DD age 5 ate there a year ago. They really liked it. DH had the mole - we lived in Tucson and DH thought the mole was quite the real deal. It is his thing to get.

I would give all the restaurants the benefit of the doubt in the Dining plan changes - I think the systems will get evened out.

The following are MHOs

I, also, think you need to give the servers soom slack. They didn't set up the crazy cramped space - perhaps enough complaining to Disney and not on the boards might change that. Additionally, there might be a language barrier with some of the staff.

And, last but not least, after living in several parts of the west and travelling in Mexico -the speed and type of service is drastically different. Whenever I go west I had to remind myself not to go crazy before the waitress brings me my menu. Relax, East Coast gal, I say to myself.

I am looking forward to trying it this August - we'll see how it goes.

I love the Fiesta Margarita outside though!

I think the Cantina is a step down from Taco Bell. Greasy, low grade meat, canned cheese, stale chips. It was fairly icky.

We avoid San Angel because we have too many great Mexican places here to spend time eating at one in Florida - though it isn't Tex Mex which is what we prefer anyways. The atmosphere is beautiful, we enjoy just stopping in to soak that up =)

I really liked san angel. the food wasn't WONDERFUL, but it was still good, and the atmosphere, well you can't beat it! very romantic. I agree about the tables being to close together. we had an ADR and only waited about 10-15 min in the middle of June. i guess it just depends on your taste!

Can't remember tons of detail now, but here's what I put in my trip report from last fall:

We really enjoyed San Angel Inn. For appetizers, I had the salad, DH and the boys (4 & 2) shared the nachos. For dinner, DH and I shared the Combinacion Cozumel, the kids shared the quesidilla meal. For dessert we split the chocolate mousse and the boys had ice cream. It was a really, really good meal, which surprised me because I don't like onions or peppers, i ate around them. There was a lot of food and we finished almost all of it.

I do remember that we were seated almost immediately after we checked in, and our server was very attentive and helpful. He didn't bat an eye at either the fact taht we wanted to share (too much food) or that we were on the dining plan. The tables are pretty close together, but it didn't affect us.

I love San Angel Inn and have eaten there a few times over the years. Last month was my first time there with my vegetarian DP, and they were able to accommodate her very well. As soon as she asked about veg options, our server gave her three choices, 2 different combo plates & a dinner salad. We both had a combo plate - mine with meat, hers without - and we both really enjoyed them. We also had the nachos (without the chorizo) for appetizer, but they weren't great. They were edible, just not fabulous. Our server was very nice & timely with the refills. The only time we couldn't find him was when we were ready for the check, but it was close to closing time so we gave him some slack. We were also seated just minutes after we arrived (we did have a later ADR, 8:15pm) and we lucky enough to get a table right next to the "river." The atmosphere is beautiful anyway, but that really added to it.

We have eaten at the SA-Inn several times over the years. Always have had good food. Once we had slow service. (It is often busy if the park is busy) We have never been dissappointed with the food. As several others have said the atmosphere is very nice as well.

We got two combos at the counter that fed 3 adults and a child between them. We thought they were good. The Chcken Taco was nice. The beef burrito was good and the Quesadilla had real cheese in it and was one tortilla folded over almost like a Taco and fried on both sides. It was a good little item. It came with black beans and salsa.
I saw the nachos someone had. They looked like a double size snack bar at the ball game type nachos with some beef and sour cream added. So we didn't get any.

We have enjoyed our meals at San Angel Inn. We found the food to be very like what we had in Quintanaroo South of Cancun, but it doesn't have a lot of TexMex on the menu. It is crowded, and I can believe the service is spotty (ours has always been unremarkable either direction).

The cantina was bad though. Wouldn't do that again. And worse, we were there over Food and Wine, when we had so many other choices for something quick.
