My sons school is having an auction. Each class does a project. The kindergarten project is a kids size table and two chairs. The other co-chair and I are not very creative. We would like to leave the table a natural wood, and place handprints from the kids on the surface, and then poly over them. Has anyone ever done anything like this that can offer me some advice? I would really appreciate any tips...especially on how to do the handprints, and what type of paint, etc, to use. Thanks so much!

Regular acrylic paint would work for the hand prints. Then spray with a poly coat. If you use a rub/brush on poly, it will smear the paint. I would poly the parts not to be painted first. That way if there is a boo-boo of some sort, it can be wiped away.

It sounds so neat. I wish I had some advice, but I'm sorely lacking in that area. Hopefully someone will come along and help.

We've done it at my school and acrylics work well. It does take quite a few coats of poly to make sure it's really well sealed. We also made sure to write the student's name next to their handprint as a memory.
