Looking for a vacation house rental in Northeast.

We vacation with another family every summer. We usually go to Lake george and stay at a resort. Next summer we are thinking of getting a house. Any ideas of where we could go besides LG? I have looked into a couple of houses there but before we committ, I would like to look into other areas. We want to be on the water(lake or beach) Would spend majority of time at the house hanging by the water but would like to be near some other stuff to do(amusement park, shopping, restaurants) Any ideas??

We rented a house on Branch Lake in Ellsworth a few years ago. It was about 30 minutes from Bar Harbor.

Can't go wrong with cape cod! Go to Hyannis and take a high speed or vehicle ferry to Nantucket. Lots to do in the general area.

The White Mountains in NH. Lots to see and do there.

Cooperstown, NY lots to do and a beautiful lake. Or somewhere like killington VT, There are tons of condo there of all sizes there to rent

Old Forge has the lakes & amusement park, altho the amusement park isn't quite on the scale of the Great Escape in LG. Lake Placid has some shopping, and is about an hour and a half from LG.

This summer we rented a house on a lake about 40 minutes from Lake Placid. It was beautiful, tranquil and in the middle of nowhere. Lake Placid has all sorts of fun activities at the Olympic site. On Friday night, there's an ice skating performance by kids studying at a camp there. Some of them are pretty good, and they also have a "star" as part of the show who participates in the camp. This year it was Johnny Weir, and he came out and signed autographs for the kids afterward. You can also watch people train doing ski jumping off the jumps onto a plastic surfaced hill, and doing snowboarding and freestyle skiing tricks into a pool of water.

It was a great mix of kayaking on the lake, enjoying the peaceful scenery and fun activities at Lake Placid.
