I'm thinking of getting a kids' digital camera for my nephew! The Fisher Price Kid Tough one looks great, gets wonderful reviews, but I'm concerned that it doesn't look enough like a "real" camera to hold his interest for long. Are there any other kiddie cameras that I am overlooking?

Thanks for your input

Personally I think the kids cameras by Fisher Price, Step2, etc are junk! I can understand getting one for a 2, 3, maybe 4 year old but no older!

The only good thing about them is the "tough" part but really just for toddlers. When my son was 5 years - he was able to handle his Nintendo DS just fine. Which costs just as much as a good camera.

The LCD screen is way too small as kids get a kick out of seeing the photo they took displayed immediately.

The resolution? Worse! 3 years ago it was less than 1 MB. I doubt the cameras have increased past 1.3 MB.

For kids 5 and older, a low end $100 camera is good!

ITA! We bought one of the FP cameras for DD and it was a nice toy, but the pictures were useless.

I agree about the picture quality of the fisher price camera being less then great. MY DD had one and she loved it at age 3. She played with it tons, it isnt about picture quality for a 3 year old, it is all about the fun of taking the pictures and seeing them on the little screen. It is a great camera for a 3 year old, he will love it and have tons of fun with it.

We bought our son the VTech KidZoom digital Camera when he turned 3. He's 5 now and still uses it. It has a large screen and shows the picture right after he takes it. The pictures come out okay if taken okay. My son hasn't learned to not move when taking them yet. The camera also has games which he enjoys playing. It's not something he uses all the time but for over 2 years it has been worth the money (we bought it on sale at Target)

for a 3 year old it is a toy. the pictures are fun, but none are going to win any awards. If they break it 5 minutes after it doesn't matter what the pics look like.

We have had several kids cameras including the fisher price one. The pictures are really bad quality. However for a 3 year old who just wants to play it is fine. My boys were never too happy with them, and they always wanted to use my camera. The best one was the Disney camera where you could add characters into your picture. The boys had fun with that feature. It was a Mickey Mouse Club House camera.

We have the Vtech one which got better reviews than the FP one. My daughter is 4 and likes it. We bought my 6 year a low-end "real" digital camera because he's more mature (we got a Kodak Easy Share, I think?). They enjoy using them at Disney...

3-5 Megapixel cameras show up at yard sales all the time for dirt cheap money, $5 or less. Get one and give it to the kid, if it breaks it's not a big loss. They are'nt high end but the picture quality is fine and if you need a sim card they are dirt cheap also, even if you buy them new.

I second the VTech KidiZoom.
We just got that for DD3 bday. She loves it and figured it out on her own in a couple of minutes. The pictures are decent, the cool thing is that it has a built in photo editor that allows you to change the photos and add borders.
She loves it and so does DS 6!

My mom bought my younger niece the VTech one at Christmas. She just turned four last month and still uses it. So does her older sister (6yrs).

Got my grandkids the Vtech 2 years ago and they love it! The vtech also takes videos and has games built in.

My son received a Fisher Price camera as a gift when he was the same age as the OP's child. The photos were so bad that we ended up returning the item. He has used an old cell phone with a camera. Believe it or not the pictures were better than the FP. He has also used an old digital camera that we had and loved it. He was very careful with it.

we got the V-Tech for my DS for christmas. he loves it as does his little sister so she will be getting one for this christmas. after reading the reviews we went with this one. V Tech got better reviews than FP.

The Vtech is great although the pictures are not very good. It has some fun effects like adding horns etc. to people's heads. My 3 year old loved it and at 5 still wants to play with it.
