"we" still wear tight clothing...but it is because we're so much fatter these days so all our clothes are tight! Seriously, I adore clothing like you are speaking of.



It is why I watch old movies. I love the clothes, the hair and the makeup.

My MIL still only wears dresses. Every.single.day.

I love the mid-century styles.

I love this look. I think it's feminine and elegant and beautiful. This is the way women dressed in the 1950s. But I have a feeling if we saw a woman at a party dressed like this she'd be called a hoochie. Why could women dress in wiggle skirts and show cleavage in the 1950s but today is sort of a no-no? I wish we could dress like this again.

Sophia Loren was gorgeous and she was all real--no **** jobs back then.

Did you know that she was 5'8" tall and weighed 140 lbs. Today she would most likely be considered *overweight* by the fashion industry.

Same thing with Lucille Ball--she wore a size 14. Goes to show you how sizing has morphed over the years into *vanity* sizing.

I think it's reasonable to suggest that most female movie persona wore exaggerated fashions much as they do today. Most women were covered and relatively modest in the 50s and 60s. The clothing may have been form fitting but it wasn't revealing nor was it sensual. Movie actresses, however, sold sex and their outfits were much more provocative.

It's not the pointy bra and small waist I'm thinking about. It's that back then women wore very tight clothes and it was acceptable. Nowadays, people look down on adult women in tight clothes.

I was just pointing out that is what I would think if i saw them today, I would not think "hoochie" mama at all. Of course I don't believe because a woman wears fitted clothing or shows a little skin that she looks like a hoochie either. Don't get me wrong, there are definitely some too tight, skin showing hoochie outfits out there, but I don't think that about tight fitting low cut clothes in general.

Just want to be clear that I don't think SL or women of the 1950s looked like hoochies. While looking at mid-century fashion, I realized that women were able to wear cleavage, skin-tight sweater and wiggle skirts without criticism.

I asked my DH and he says the difference between today's women and back then is that today the thing is to show skin, while back then women were covered while wearing the tight clothes.

I think your DH is right. Nowadays it IS a "hoochie" look--much less classy.

While I love the look you speak of from mid-century, I also doubt I'd like to try cutting hair in it all day long. I used to work in dress clothes and heels when I was young but after 28 years, I think I give a better haircut when my feet aren't hurting!!

Maybe just because I am a guy and notice it, but it seems rare today to not see women, everywhere anywhere, any age, showing cleavage all the time. I find it to be actually quite ubiquitous; sometimes looks great/appropriate, more than often though, looks like trash.

No, I do not think you are reading her right. I think she was asking for opinions not saying that she thinks that first pic would make one a hoochie momma. She seems to like the fashions from that time just like I do.

The reason I was looking at those fashions this evening is because my son is getting married next year and I long to wear one of the formal style dresses of the 1950s style. So I started looking at old photos and the question of this thread popped into my head. I swear I love Sophia Loren and I love her style.

I don't know if real people wore that kind of thing. Certainly people in the fashion spreads and movies did, but that is all pretty glamorous. Think about today and the things that people wear in magazines, the "red carpet", TV and movies. Even those clothes are nicer than many people wear in everyday life. So, I don't think you can go by magazine pictures and movies for how people really dressed.

Actually, I probably would. And I do think people can dress trashy and make themselves look like trash. But hey, there's a lot of people on here much more nice than me.
